    To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to you concerning my grandfather, Johann Sodec. He was born on Dec 23, 1886 in Radovici Slovenia. He emigrated to the US on Dec 23rd, 1910 with his cousin Marko Kostelic (37 years old in 1910 and from the town of Drasic) aboard the steamship St. Louis, arriving on Ellis Island. It stated on the ships manifest that they were traveling to Allgeheny, Pennsylvania to stay with a friend of Marko. The next bit of information we have is that he was living in Dunfermline Illinois in 1925 and was working as a coal miner. Around 1930 he left Illinois for Bainbridge, Georgia and then shortly thereafter moved to Quincy, Florida where he met my grandmother, Mae Kelly, and they were married. They had 3 children; Josie, Joseph, and my father, John Sodec Jr. Any information or advice which you could provide would be deeply appreciated. This is all the information which we have concerning him, except the fact that he had a brother.

    Sincerely,
    John Sodec III

I am looking for the Bozic and Krofino/Korafino families from Kranjska (Krain), Slovenia.

Matija Bozic (b. abt 1873) and Maria Krofino/Korafino (b. abt 1865) immigrated to the US (Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania) from Krain, Slovenia, in June 1901. They traveled separately. Matija Bozic and his brother-in-law Matija Korafino (b. 01 Jan 1875) left on the North German Lloyd ship Friedrich der Grosse out of Bremen into New York on 5 Jun 1901. Both stated their last place of residence was Brusnice.

Maria Bozic and her children Franc (b. 02 Feb 1896) and Maria (b. 04 May 1898) left on the S.S. La Bretagne out of Havre into New York on 23 Jun 1901. Maria stated her last place of residence was Velike, Slovenia.

The Bozic’s settle in McKees Rocks, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania, where they had two more children: Louis (b. 22 Jun 1902) and John (b. 04 Nov 1904).

Matija Krofino settled in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, and in 1907, married a Josephine/Josefa Pepa Gorjup (b. abt 1889). Josefa also came from Krain/Kranjska, and came to the US in 1906, possibly on the Kronprinze Wilhelm out of Bremen into New York. On the manifest she stated her place of last residence was (what looks like) Zlastna Gora ???

Family history says that for some reason both Matija and Maria Bozic went back to Slovenia sometime around 1905, and disappeared. Their children were taken in and raised by four different families; they have no idea what happened to their parents.

We are seeking information on the Bozic, Krofina, and Gorjup families in Krain/Kranjska, Slovenia, and would like to find out what happened to Matija and Maria when they went back to Slovenia in 1905.

Any help you could provide in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated.

  • Very interesting story… I find it odd that they would return without their children. That is not a very Slovenian thing to do.
