Sierra Leone: Election update

Sierra Leone election update: “If you don't know by now let me be the first to say that THERE WILL BE A RUN OFF….No political party will be able to get 55% of the votes in this first round. Also there are many of my friends in the diaspora who believed the APC PROPAGANDA MACHINE and have been circulated a preliminary result form printed in AWOKO Newspaper….those results are not valid and do not represent the current picture.”

    Unu Kushe fambul dem,
the people of salone have shown a lot of maturity so far…i dont care which of the two SLPP or APC wins the lections..in actual fact they are one and the same…when APC was in power for 27 year, some of these SLPP guys who wants to present themselves as mr clean, were there in the thick and thin of things…take Abass Bundu, he was Minister under Shaki and now vying for parliamentary seat under the SLPP…take sama banya and JB Dowda the list is endless..so where is the difference,..and if APC wins…you will see how many SLPP big vons will declare their support for the APC…”i realised my mistake and now am back to my root the APC which is only way out…” so let people dont fuss over this…

what we want is free and fair elections. so that the people will choose who they want at this time or risk returning the country to unwarranted and shameful bloodletting…

the real struggle will start after the elections and the new leader takes office…the struggle for better standard of living…the people are not fighting for anyones ideas in his/her head…they want peace, bread and basic services…Lonta

I am very sad to hear people saying that APC party was corrupt and mismanagement of goverment wealth. SLPP party proved that they are also corrupt and mismanaged the country wealth. What we should be praying for is to get a true leader probably a bit radical to move the country forward. Charles Margai gave contracts to his wife and family friends when he was a minister under the SLPP goverment. So i don’t trust him lead us. He is someone who do not consult his team most times when he needed to make a decision. He would decide on his own and inform them later.Lets pray for better leader& salone. I don’t care who takes over the goverment as long as they have vision and move the country forward. We need some one who is radical because salone is lawless at the moment. god bless salone.

Yusufu, I agree with you that there are wise men in the North and have voted wisely. The fact is beside the issue of trebalism it appears that two political ideologies separate the North and the South of Sierra Leone. I grew up to know APC as a centre left liberal party. Under the one party system in Sierra Leone, SLPP did not have the opportunity to demonstrate its political belief, but by the looks of things the party appears be a conservative party bent on building a special type of elitism in Sierra Leone. During the rule of the SLPP I visited Sierra leone five times and saw how a special class of people emerging. I am talking of a class structure where the few are living in luxury gated houses and feared and the majority living in gettos. I hope APC will learn from these mistakes of the SLPP. Luntan.

I am a Sierra Leonean, with a British citizenship and I am a Mende from Kenema. I have not personally benefited from any of the political parties of Sierra Leone in the past, being SLPP or APC. I have always worked very hard for myself to complete secodary edocation in Sierra Leone, with the help of my diseased parents before leaving for U.K where I now live for the past twenty years with my wife, (also a Sierra Leonean and culturally groomed Mende) and our four children, all borned and now growing up in UK. Thank God, Britain has presented me with the opportunity of living a decent life and becoming a millionaire throgh genuine hard work.

Which ever political party wins, my only main interest is whether that party would allow me to complete the community development project I have recently started in my home town (identity witheld), involving the constuction of 200 houses, renovation of motor roads, construction of bridges and institutig of vocational education complex involving secondary and tertiary
    education system.

Although my parents are not now alived (killed during the civl war and whose graves I have not still or may never set eyes on), I think it would be evil of any party in power to prevent me from helping to develop my birth place to the best of my ability, regardless of whosoever is in power; whether Solomon Berewa or Ernest Koroma.

Therefore, good luck to the winner who may have good and genuine intention for Sierra Leone; and with no tribal or regional sentiment in front of leadership.

I applaud all of you for being able to comment on the situation in Freetown. This shows that people are realizing the problems of our country; I do hope that in doing so would bring about the necessary changes that are needed to take Sierra Leone to the next level. That level where one would be able to see progress prevail, People would be able to go to work and get paid, Children will be able to go to school to get the education needed to survive in today’s world. One would be able to go to the hospital and get attention, and to be able to get clean water and light for once. Keep it up you all.

Personally, I applaud my fellow sierra Leoneans living abroad and demonstrating concern over the ongoing election. It exhibits a heartfelt love to our motherland. I have been living in the U.S. for about eight years now, but my hearth and soul still belong to Sierra Leone. Yet, sometimes I am worried-worried about the fact that some of the statements made at this site absorb regional and tribal sentiment. It is not time for us to learn that this is the very scheme that drags that country into 11 years of bloody civil war? I don’t care who wins or lose the current election. All I know is that who ever comes to power will have a monumental task in front him; a task brought on by one of the most senseless wars (which we should be ashamed of) in human history that, would probably takes another 50 to 60 years to amend. The best we can do now is to join forces with who ever come to power to rebuild that country. And please let stop playing the blaming game.

I am a sierra leonean who have lived in the united kingdom for over 17yrs. My heart and soul has always been been with my people home and abroad. I am really happy with the outcome of the results, congratulations to all those who voted APC. I really feel SLPP has let all sierra leoneans down, we desperately need a change, whatever the outcome of the run-off, we know that the majority needs a change in our country and their voices have been heard. Myself and all sierra leoneans home and abroad are just praying for a free and fair and peaceful run-off.

Politic everywhere else in the world is not a perfect sience. The theme here is tolerance of each other for the good of the nation. Sierra leoneans are fatally competitive, our political ideologies, afinity is harmful to an extent that tribalistically polarized the nation between north versus the greater southeast. It has made us the poorest nation in the world, with a wealth of resources not found anywhere else. We are at all times pointing fingers at one group or the other failling emencely to do the functions required to settle this small country to remain peaceful to allow outside investment that is indespensable for national development. Berewa and Koroma will never have the funds to develop Sierra Leone, if the country remains on a war foot. Love each other, work together to make our beloved Sierra Leone to attract Western European and Asian investors to develop Sierra Leone and also make profit without threats from segments in the nation to burn down their businesses, no matter where developments are put. I lost 5 brothers,2 sisters and many relatives, who were going about there business in the hinterland and not involved with the war issues and politics in freetown. I hope Sierra will grow out of this and go forward. Thanks to all as the opposing foes, who know best to make our beloved nation to grow and go forward. God Bless all of you in your endeavors and God bless who wins this election. Le us love each other and stop committing hainous crimes against each other, making us appear as the most stuppid and laughing stalk of the world; we have the best diamonds in the world but we are not able to prepare the country, I mean Sierra Leoneans to enjoy the wealth in peace and live freely. Thank you all for making politics a perfect science, not possible elsewhere. Sierra Leone will never be a perfect country, there are tribes, regions and groups that are going to compete or munipulate each other like husband and wife but still love each other, learning from each other on a daily basis for the good will of the Sierra Leonean families of this world.

It doesn’t matter who wins the battom to state house. Thank god the election had been closely monitored and considered by international observers as free and fair. in deed, it is a stepping stone towards political and socio-economic recovery. I think what sierra leoneans wanted to see now is patriotic and tranparant government. Turning the coin on the other side we would also like to see constructive opposition party (s) serveing as watch dogs in the interest of all sierra leoneans. Bravo to the young musicians in sierra leone their messages has now started to reach the masses. Please keep it up.

I am a sierra leonean living in the united states. I have no objection to which party wins the election, but let me ask every sierra leonean “isn’t it time for new political parties to emerge in sierra leone?. Both the so called A.P.C and SLPP parties have failed the people of sierra leone. It’s time for new breed of politicians in sierra leone instead of recyled APC OR SLPP politicians who move back and forth from SLPP to APC and then from APC to APC. Aren’t we all tired of seeing the same old faces in politics. What can we really proud of as sierra leoneans after thirty eight years independence?. Sierra leone has been classified as the poorest nation in the world, eventhough we nave a lot of natural resources. Sierra leone has suffered decades of exploitations by both SLPP and APC.lET’S DON’T VOTE ON SENTIMENT WE WANT SOMEBOBY WHO IS READY TO MOVE SIERRA LEONE FORWARD AND PROJECT AN IMAGE OF SIERRA LEONE THAT WE CAN ALL PROUD OF. LONG LIVE SIERRA LEONE !!!
