Note to the Chinese people: the West doesn’t care! We know China is a developing country and no amount of grass-painting, spit-fining, or herding of migrant workers into secret locations will change that. China has a lot to be proud of and the Chinese should be proud of their country, blemishes and all.
Every attempt to make reality look prettier than it actually is just creates another news story causing foreigners to giggle and shake their heads.
I might understand the desire to “save face” if the foreigners coming to Beijing expected something different, but we don’t.
If the city government decided to dismiss all the workers to their villages for the Olympics, without pay, that would be the real blemish.
