Sudan: Darfur conflict vs. Paris Hilton on Google

Thinker's Room defines insanity as Paris Hilton vs. Darfur conflict on Google: “That’s right. There is almost FIVE TIMES as much content about some nebulous nobody than one of the biggest tragedies every to befall this earth. We pay more attention to issues of nuisance value than serious catastrophes that we could avoid but don’t.”

If we could assume for a moment that God is a fiction of our imagination, then it is very easy to understand this phenomenon. Everyone is essentially self-centered. The only person who matters to you is yourself and your life is the only one that counts. When you have children you deposit a real part of yourself in them. Therefore, that is a more “biological” connection. When Paris cried and called her mother and father it touched most people who have a child of their own. The story is like this: no matter how much money and power her parents could not help her. Everyone is projecting their ego into this story. As Rousseau said “the only passion that Man had in the state of Nature was “compassion”” so our larger brains give us the capability to project. Essentially, very few people care about a group of people in some part of the world which is not theirs and people whom they do not know at all, and who are of a different culture and possibly race, and who knows what is going on down there and why. On the other hand, every mother, father and child can identify with Paris Hilton. It is all related to projection and emotions. That is the answer.

Going by my experience, one could say the same of Global Voices.
