Sri Lanka: State Sponsored Abductions

Lanka Whistle-Blower on what appear to be state sponsored abductions. ” It started with abductions of Tamil businessmen, and extended to the Muslim community, and has now made the transition to the Sinhalese as well. What is all the more shocking — no wait, I take that back. What is all the more interesting is the little or no effort done by the authorities to stem these recent developments. The little or no effort, however, can be attributed to the growing perception that the government and the security forces are indeed behind these activities.”

Abduction of a human being by an armed group or by state goons is deplorable and the criminal/ criminals should be charged and brought before justice. But then, the legal system of SL (Ceylon) which ‘was’ based on a complex mixture of Roman-Dutch Law, English common law, Thesawalamai, Kandyan Law, Muslim Law and other personal laws introduced and adopted by the legislature and judicature acts since the British colonial rule had seen a sea change since the “imposition” of 1972 Republican Constitution.
The Judiciary and the judicial system since 1972 had become the paramour of the plundering gangster politicians. The JSC now stands for Judicatura Sum Criminalis.
Offence and illegal acts committed by the politicians and their family often sanitized and is under sub judice forever!!
The people especially the commoner have come to the end of their tether and expect no justice or compensation. It is Law of the Cannibals that prevail in Lanka!! Period.

Abductions for money or political reasons is a common feature in countries whose system of law and order have collapsed or in the process. Sri Lanka falls into this category although the recent decision of the Supreme Court, on censuring the shameful eviction of Tamils from Colombo, gives indications everything is not lost entirely here yet. As for the abductions, a leading member of the Opposition UNP, in the floor of Parliament, named a senior Police officer and a former Air Force Squadron leader – as those behind these abductions. In any civilised society the first thing that would have been done is to arrest both and set in motion an independent enquiry. In this case without the involvement of Police or armed forces personnel of GoSL.
Why was not this done yet? How can we claim to be a society living under accepted norms of law and order if this basic tenet of governance is ignored?
