India: On hymens, virgins and women

An Anthropologist Wannabe on hymenoplasty. “But how do we turn our backs on these women who in all likelihood could be killed by their fathers, brothers or husbands (Honor killings) if it is found out that they are not virgins? Aren't doctors morally bound to help these women who could face certain death if they are discovered to be non-virgins?”

the idea of ‘morally bounding’ the doctors in this context is very absurd, indeed. and on the same lines, one can say that women (& men too) are ‘morally bound’, not to bare themselves (forget doing the act of love) in front of the another!

The solution is long term. Nothing can be done ‘after’ the killing, for the so-called victim. Awareness about the genuine Honor wrt women is not just about their maintainig their virginity, but to a very, very broad domain. There was a line in a campaign, with a person sitting in a small shop, ‘Kalpana chawla’s brother runs a grocery shop in a city in punjaab; Save Girl Child’. this is a genuine honor. and on similar lines, though virginity is a personal matter, why should lose it when you know that your loved and dear ones will get hurt when a ‘third person’ tell them the ‘status of truth’ in not a pleasent manner.
    Awareness, patience are the keywords.

  • Sonu: IMHO – In the end – it is a woman’s right to lose her hymen or her mind anywhere and to whomsoever she wants. If she wants her hymen back on – that’s again her right. That it is reflective of a sad state of affairs is quite another matter.
