El Salvador: Preliminary Census Figures

Categories: Latin America, El Salvador, Development

Early returns from the first Salvadoran census since 1992 have found that there are less citizens in the country than expected. Tim Muth provides the prediction that “you can expect the ARENA government to spin this as good news — it means a greater per capita income statistic when you divide the country's Gross Domestic Product by the number of inhabitants [1],” but on the other hand, perhaps more Salvadorans are leaving because of the poor opportunities at home.
