Israel: What's Wrong With Golan?

Israeli blogger Shmuel writes about how a customer service center in Jerusalem, which promises to deliver packages anywhere in Israel, refuses to deliver him a package to his home in Golan Heights.

  • Hi Amira,

First, thanks for mentioning my blog, Go Golan.

I want to clarify a thing about the Jerusalem-based customer service center that I wrote about on my blog yesterday. The issue they had with sending a package to the Golan had nothing to do with the geopolitical issues in the Middle East; rather, they’re sole issue was the fact that it is a 3-hour trip from Jerusalem, whereas the majority of their deliveries are probably within a 40-minute radius from their office.

Regarding your question, what’s wrong with Golan? That’s actually an excellent question. Have you read any posts on my blog? If so, you’ll see how beautiful it truly is and how “simple” life is in this rural, picturesque country setting.

Notwithstanding, in regards to the political issues, I believe you’ll have to agree that the Israeli-Syrian border is one of the quietest borders Israel knows and has ever known. This stability spans 40 years, since the end of the Six Day War in 1967, of course not counting the breech of that peace in 1973 when Syria tried to regain control of the Golan Heights in a surprise attack that took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

So if it is proving to be one of the quietest borders in modern-Israeli history (remember Jews have lived in the Golan Heights since the 4th century CE and before then in Biblical times) I’d have to say there’s nothing wrong with the Golan and I look forward to the day when we can trust the Syrians and allow them into our country. Amen.

    Regards,

    Shmuel @ Go Golan

  • It makes sense, Anywhere in Israel, should not mean the Golan! it simply makes sense…

  • You are living on our land. You will be evicted soon, your political leaders are running out of patience with people like you, who are in breach of international law.

  • Btw Amira…

I find myself compelled to say, that you should also add Syria to the geographical categorization of the post… I mean, it just makes sense, these are disputed lands, that belong to Syria in any given international forum, and international Law… I feel it is only normal that when you wanna categorize it geographically. its very misleading to put Israel only… Its not political. It is just facts.

“The UN did not recognise the “annexation” and they officially consider the Heights to be Israeli occupied. This view was expressed in the unanimous non-binding UN Security Council Resolution 497 stating that “the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect.” It, like other relevant UN resolutions takes care to not explicitly call it an “annexation”, referring at most to Israel’s “annexationist policies.””

    a quick note ;)
    Thank you…

Who cares what UN recognizes or not. UN, an inept organization, sits idly by while people in the world get slaughtered by thousands. Golan was captured as a result of Syrian attack on Israel. Golan historically always belong to Israel and will remain part of Israel in the feature. Any Israel’s PM who will be treacherous enough as to give up Golan to Syria will get a bullet to his head. End of story.

  • Says a lot about how much Israel wants peace.

  • “Any Israel’s PM who will be treacherous enough as to give up Golan to Syria will get a bullet to his head.”

Israelis love to solve their problems through violence. Well, it makes sense. After all, the State of israel was created by violence, expanded into the Syrian Golan Heights by violence, and continues to exist by violence.

Like I said, if you are content to live on other people’s land, the world will never support you. The occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and the Syrian Golan has the support of no country in the world except the US.
