Hong Kong: Student Press on Sex

The Chinese University Student Press recently put a sex column in their magazine. The mainstream media has picked up the issue and condemn the student press obscene. Charles picked up the discussion at inmediahk.net and commented that the student press shouldn't be market oriented [zh]. While the Chinese University student press issued a statement to criticise the mainstream's reports in stimagtizing sex, while on the other hand commercialize sex in their entertainment pages (also from inmediahk.net) [zh].

I do not know what’s the big fuss about this. May be I have missed something. I really do not know why people would like to know the general poll of sex inclination. Shouldn’t students in Hong Kong pay more attention to global issues than individual personal preference? If younger generations in HK continue to focus on local tabloids and lack global perceptive, for sure Hong Kong will lose its competitive edge.

Please do not criticise if you do not get the whole picture. Please, are Hong Kong students not paying any attention to global issues? This is totally illogical to say students should focus on other aspects, rather than sex. What is your logic?

it is just a sex column, in fact, the student press have many other concerns, such as hong kong social forum, preservation and environmental issue, etc.. politics of sex is also a very important issue that they have taken up recently.

My heart sunk in disbelief upon learning that CU’s so-called disciplinary committee even threaten to expel those pitiful students, citing statements such as it “damaged the reputation of the university.” It is both shocking and heart-breaking to see the way a supposedly reputable university handles the issue, stabbing on the students’ backs after pushing them out to face public criticism, as if fearing that they do not die a violent death. This should not be a matter of whether the article is of good taste or not, hardly. As Voltaire puts it, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
Sounds like a Keep clean and virginal campaign by communist cadres. Unworthy of an university in the free world.
Why shouldn’t adults talk about sex? Or does Chinese University teach kindergarten kids?
