Sri Lanka: An unlikely Cricket Fan

Categories: South Asia, Sri Lanka, Sport

The World Cup makes an otherwise indifferent person a cricket fan [1]. “I was surprised by my own enthusiasm because honestly I still don't care much for the sport. It being the World Cup it was only natural that I rooted for the home team. I can't exactly point out how it started but I'm sure it's a combination of being away from home where cricket season is almost like a communal pilgrimage of such devotion and eagerness and purely infectious zeal, that need of wanting to stay connected to home that's so faraway, the memories of watching long cricket matches (which I spent most of my time dissing just to piss people off) with family I have now lost like my grandma the biggest supporter of the Sri Lankan team and just that general feeling of home sweet home really.”
