Pakistan: On protests and politics

iFaqeer on the political developments in Pakistan. “You see, one thing I have always said about Pakistan is that one of the problems we have in keeping our governments honest and our military in its barracks is that we don't, as a rule, do street protests about actual government high-handedness–or bread riots. And on the other hand, like everyone else, we're not very fond of lawyers as a profession. And judges, like a lot else in Pakistan, are just dismissed as part of the whole corrupt system.”

Its not about the lack of will shown by the Pakistanis to protest. They do have the tendancy to protest on the streets. They protested against the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, they protested against the cartoon issue, they protested against against Israel’s bombing of Lebanon, they protested against the destruction of Babri Masjid and Gujrat riots in India etc. They protest on all these issues which does not affect them directly. They never protest against high fuel prices, democracy, human rights, power breakdowns or extreme inflation. Why? becasue they are being exploited by religious organizations.

The revolution in Iran was basically a civil rights movement which was hijacked by the Mullahs. Similarly we need a civil rights Champion to capitalize on this mood of resentment amongst the Pakistanis. We need a leader to show us the way. The west whine about the lack of democracy and human rights in the developing world. They install currupt regimes in the third world countries and dont let any genuine leader to flourish. And if there ever is a sincere leader, they form an alliance against him, isolate him, make him inactive or even have him killed. Its too difficult for a country like Pakistan to get out of this web netted arround it by ………. u know who? Especially in this unipolar world. The world needs a second Super Power very badly for entangled countries to break free.
