Stalin valorised some of the cruellest figures in history as outstanding statesmen, including Ivan the Terrible. In 1937 he added Timur’s name to his list of esteemed military commanders. Soviet history books were immediately rewritten to depict Timur as the saviour from the Mongol-Tatar yoke.”
