Lusosphere: Reporting Carnival

After four days of official Carnival revelry — and seven weeks of regular preparations and rehearsals since the year started — Brazilians will finally start thinking about getting back to work. The interested reader will be pleased to see how blogs are full of accounts describing street celebrations and links to pictures, audio and video files all over the net. Indeed, to navigate through the visual reports of Brazilian streets during Carnival time can be a fascinating experience to world audiences, but a deeper look will evidence how the spectacular images can cloud some subtle but important local debates over the very concept of the celebration. In times of augmented citizen participation in reporting events trough web 2.0 services and blogging activity, will the mainstream media exhibition format of the Brazilian Carnival endure?

Esqueça o Rio e a Bahia.
Esqueça o Rio e a BahiaRodrigo Muniz

If you are one of those who have always experienced Carnival through the TV, probably you hate it as much as I used to do… Are you gonna travel? Forget Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. These two Carnivals may still have it's own value, but the whole thing turned out into an industry model with fashion bands and music, and the citizen is just a consumer of fantasies and ‘abadas’ [uniforms used by blocks members] in exchange for a mere 3 seconds exposure on Globo TV or maybe a ‘sapinho’ [yeast infection] earned in a stolen kiss inside the isolation lace to the sound of an incredibly high volume ‘trio elétrico’. If you are going to travel pick Recife/Olinda, the only places for people who like blocks, ‘frevo’, ‘maracatu’, ‘marchinhas’, MPB [Brazilian Popular Music], ‘manguebeat’, root samba, ‘coco de roda’, ‘ciranda’, independent rock, funk, ‘forro’, ‘caboclinho'…[the many Carnival modes and rythms] It is the famous multicultural carnival.

Multicultural Carnival in Olinda

One of the saddest episodes in this Carnival [in Rio de Janeiro, during the samba schools parade] was the expulsion of samba singer, composer and long time Mangueira [famous samba school] supporter Beth Carvalho from one of the allegoric parade cars… An emblematic declaration from Mangueira's carnival manager reinforced the weirdness in the situation. During a live interview to Globo TV he said he could not displace someone who have paid a lot of money for the costume and for the right to be there… The ‘carioca’ [from Rio de Janeiro] samba schools do not resemble the communities from where they have emerged any more, looking more like a product or service where who pays more earns more comfort and prestige. It is like a big luxury hotel. The ones with the money, get more cudled.

A violência no carnaval e outras ondasGustavo Rios – Overmundo

It happened that I, myself, already tired of adventures, decided to enjoy this year's Carnival in one of the Vip Lounges here [Salvador, Bahia]. I manage to chose the one which was financially accessible, closer to the ‘Barra / Ondina’ track — which is a great advantage, and the locals will know what I am talking about — the one which could be paid in 10 times on the credit card. It was a gift to my wife, as she loves the Carnival. But there was no way I could fit in the circumstance. The spacey place was filled with lots of playboys and playgirls, and friendly ‘gringos’, while others not so friendly. It was really big, and seemed like a well planned and organized setting… There was a Japanese restaurant, amiable waiters, internet connection, fast food, cinemas, an unpracticed entertainer, a night club, some guys and girls in angels costumes, among other things. Almost a mall. And that was exactly how I felt about it: being inside a big shopping center. Too clean and unpassioned, with the cold and detached atmosphere of a mall food plaza, filled with those grown-up boys walking through show windows while eating hamburguers.

Olinda's Carnival today is certainly the biggest and more authentic popular celebration in Brazil. It is the only way to gather in the streets all the cultural diversity available in the region, without asking money from the people who comes to attend the party or building vip boxes for those full of money. Olinda's Carnival is indeed a popular and participative celebration in a time when popular culture displays in general have been formatted by commercial and spectacle-driven influences… The main and simple measure adopted by the public administration, aside the huge communication and organization plan to support the celebrations, was prohibiting the use of any electronic sound in public spaces during the days of Carnival… Salvador, the city which still holds big fame for its street Carnival, is quickly losing space due to the transformation of its popular manifestations.

Another aspect
which always earns attention and fuels heated debates during Carnival time in Brazil is the exposition of nude bodies, and the carnality manifested by participants during the celebrations. Dating back to its Greek origins and traveling through centuries of Catholic influence, Carnival has come to be seen as one last gasp of music, food, alcohol, and sex before Lent — the forty days period after Ash Wednesday until Easter. The word itself comes from Latin, “Carne Vale” or “Farewell to the Flesh”. Make sense, doesn't it? Check it out on the links and quotes below.

What we do see are sex celebrations happening at will on these carnival gatherings in Rio de Janeiro and in Sao Paulo, endless lechery in Salvador, Recife, Olinda… Naked women is something that will never be scarce in Brazil's Carnival. It's been always like this, and it won't change now. It is happening now in 2007, and it will the same in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The motto is ‘kiss on the mouth’ and ‘nobody is nobody's’. The established culture here is to ‘do it while it is carnival time, as nobody will mind if you are with someone here now, and with another one in the next moment’. This culture has brought forth kisses and more kisses, sex and more sex… It is not a coincidence that November / December are the months when more children are born in Brazil. This is a good explanation for the fact that the Brazilian working year starts only after Carnival.

It happened that last Saturday I watched ‘Jornal Hoje’ and got astounded by a report entitled ‘Stolen Kiss’. The text mode can be seen here, and the video (I suggest it for its licentiousness) in this link. You can call me outmoded for thinking that kissing is an intimate act, that should be done when there is ‘something more’ between two persons. However, I believe that even if I was more broad-minded as to see those quick affairs of today as normal, even then this report would have made me sick. After seeing it, as soon as I got over my astonishment I confess that I got a little sad about living in a place worldly known as the “country of Carnival”.
One more reason justifying my repulse to carnivalRodrigo Ghedin

Nevertheless my love, got to get drunk, slightly insane! Got to lose the rigid notion about everything, about what the psique screams: No! Got to get lost in the rhythm. I am, we are rhythmic beings. Got to let it flow, just feeling, to dance with unrecognizable faces to the sound of common tunes, our tunes! To dance, to jump, to risk being yourself and knowing what it is known to be, but which you keep safe!
But, my loveSocoh.net

As mulheres descrevem tudo extasiadas.
O carnaval e o corpo femininoPúblico & Privado

While I write here, the women who in a few hours from now will parade in the ‘sambodromo’ in Rio de Janeiro are preparing their bodies, the great stars of the night — after months of daily workout, esthetic massages, samba lessons, rehearsals and proof sessions of their minuscule costumes. The celebrities are proud in disclosing diets and body treatments they have gone through. Their bodies are now being undressed and depilated. Oils and purpurine are carefully applied so that the glowing bodies can attract even more eyeballs, and the women get all excited in describing all that. The Brazilian woman performs the sensual, beautiful, pleasing and easy female. The wonderful bodies ‘au naturel’ moving from one side to the other, sensually inviting. Everything so ‘natural’. The woman in Rio de Janeiro's Carnival is a great supporter of this brutal cult of fitness we now have in Brazil. She also feeds the idea of the feminine body as an object, which reflects today on the advertisement industry and also in social behaviors. After all, during the Carnival she is able to show that her appeals are nothing more than thighs, hips and butts. We can't get alarmed if the world stops to curiously watch this phenomenon.

People in some parts
of the world as Portugal doesn't just stop and watch the Brazilian Carnival, but also take it as an inspiration and a model to celebrate the season. As we will see below, the phenomenon of cloning the colony's carnival is not rendering positive comments from Portuguese bloggers. From the other side, the language connections between Brazil and Portugal were sang by Mangueira [one of the biggest samba schools in the country] as it's central theme and samba for this year's parade in the ‘sambodromo’ in Rio de Janeiro. The experience of parading with Mangueira is described from inside by a blogger.

CarnavalNum Lugar Perdido

The Carnival is not as it used to be anymore. I think it is sad not to experience the Carnival in the Portuguese way, and to insist in imitating the Brazilians. Why is it that they insist to wear those golden bikinis and to get out in the cold? Just to mimic the Brazilians? Are they aware that here is winter while it is summer there? Hey people, get some sense and dress yourself. Go play the Carnival as it should be. Use masks, play games, and forget about these ‘brasileirices’.
CarnivalNum Lugar Perdido

In a saying from the man on charge of Figueira Grande Turismo, the Carnival from Figueira da Foz / Buarcos is “each time more Portuguese”. How to believe that when dozens of gifted luso girls pretending to be tropical mulatas parade undressed in the open winter, shaking of cold under the Atlantic wind and the temperature of 10º C, hanging on the illusion of being in the middle of the ‘carioca’ [from Rio de Janeiro] summer, under thirty many grades?
An each time more Portuguese carnival?quintopoder

Maravilhosa.

Wonderfull. With a theme based on the Portuguese language, [Mangueira] got a standing ovation. “Come in the Mangueira's ‘vira’, come to the samba / My language has the power to transform / Turn the Sampa Palace into a Portuguese House / It is a Portuguese House for sure”

CarnavalCaderno do Rafael

Talking about Portuguese language in the context of this popular celebration, I can't fail to mention the ‘Estação Primeira de Mangueira’ [Mangueira's full name] which praised our language in its samba theme. Indeed, there is no way I can fail to mention it as I participated in one of the blocks in the parade. After waiting three hours dressed in ‘armor’, or should I say, a ‘feathered Indian’ costume in the middle of Pres. Vargas Avenue, we entered ‘Marquês de Sapucai’ [the sambodrome]. My fiancé and I, right after the green and pink [Mangueira's colors] fireworks exploded in the sky, we fell in the samba and were saluted by the crowd standing there. We did what we could with all those feathers all over our bodies. Despite the magnificent spectacle and the unique sensation, we did suffer during the waiting in the concentration. We were almost run over by allegoric cars, due to problems in organization and communication from the part of the carnival managers, and there were lots of people suffering with the heat, the long wait, and the hot costumes. But, this is Carnival. It is Brazil. Kick the ball ahead cause another block is coming from behind.

While almost everybody
in the country is looking for the best way to perform their personal amount of sins for the season, some still find better use of their time in front of computer monitors. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are running from the celebrations, as we can se by the Carnival events scheduled to happen in Second Life.

Carnival in Second Life

Second Life sediará desfiles de carnavalFatalNet

If you do like Carnival, but for any reason won't be able to support your favorite samba school in the avenue, the computer can be an alternative. The most Brazilian of all celebrations will happen in virtual mode in different places of the social network Second Life. One option for the connected party-goers is IG's event, which will happen from Saturday at 22 hs. to Sunday's at 2 hs., in an address informed through the group ‘Carnival IG 2007′. The avatars will be able to have fun with many costumes models (freely available) and an open bar energized by the sound of a ‘trio eletrico’. There will be big screens displaying the real celebration live from Salvador, in Bahia. Second lifers used to hang around Sao Paulo Island — a place now sheltering PSDB party units and stores of the fashion brand Cavalera — will have the chance to participate in other parades, which will happen everyday starting at 21hs, during the whole holyday. For those who are not samba fans, the event organizers are promising presentations of famous DJs.

After visiting Recife
on the eve of Carnival, and feeling the pulse of an open and energetic celebration powered by people like you and me, in the middle of regular streets, I started to believe in Carnival. But then the TV formatted Brazilian carnival I grew up watching, the one which is still broadcasted as a world class show, sounded even more artificial and monotonous. In this situation, I could only take advantage of being part of such a dynamic and creative community as the Brazilian blogosphere, which is able to share solutions to solve every blogger's problem.

Aproveite a promoção.

Today, almost 10% of the Brazilian population own blogs, websites, TV shows or write to newspapers. The other 90% are just normal people, or should we say, people gifted with illiteracy and some kind of economic misery. From the point of view of this talented world-dominating minority, Carnival is not a pleasant celebration any more. This happens because they need to narrate in their articles absolutely everything they are seeing in the Avenue [Sambodrome in Rio] or in Salvador's trios eletricos. In order to ease blogger's Carnival time, our site has created an easy and infallible system to facilitate the tough work of internauts and writers.
