Lusosphere: Who? Me? You!? Why not Hugo?

time capaTIME Magazine's choice of ‘You’ as the ‘Person of the Year’ has created interesting reactions in Lusophone blogs. The coddling move from the editorial giant towards the new class of content creators among its audience initially seduced the web 2.0 crowds. Many commentators were quick to agree effusively with the choice delivering self congratulatory notes. But others would would soon start demanding from their blog visitors the expected critical investigative attitude of ‘awarded’ content-generators.

A internet revolucionou minha vida.

The Internet has transformed my life. It's not exactly a novelty, but it sure deserves to be mentioned. It has promoted a 180 degree turn in my reading, searching, interaction and knowledge habits. The revolution happened to be so big that Time Magazine has elected me the ‘Person of the Year’. Putting it simply, the Internet has brought me the freedom to read only what interests me, to hear the tunes that I really like, to discover what the radios would never play, to watch what TV would never broadcast. Mainly, it has provided me with the possibility of openly commenting about all that. The best of it all is that the mainstream media started to share space with alternative sources — the illustrious bloggers. This makes all the difference. In many cases, to read a blogger's opinion about a subject is more interesting than reading an article about the same issue. The use of the first person changes everything.

Bote a roda pra girar, babe.

This time it was ‘YOU’, or I, we, you and them. The computer screen on the cover bring a mirrored effect so that each one will see his own face. The web 2.0 was responsible for creating that. For those who still find it difficult to understand, it is not easy to explain. The whole thing is so simple that looks like an idiocy. YouTube, MySpace, blogs, Flickr and Slide are only some of the tools we use on a daily basis to explore the possibilities of this virtual space. Nobody goes through the day without checking the inbox, or sending a sms, or downloading a new mp3. You don't understand? This new web is active, not a passive one. That's why ‘You’ is the name of the guy. It's you who are absorbing and generating knowledge at each click. Turn the wheels, babe. You don't have to know by heart when you have Google; give up ‘Nevermind’ as you can find a New Zealander of Chinese descent singing through Bitcomet; read ‘Grande Sertao: Veredas’ for the first time… in pdf. Go for it! The Internet is shouting at you: ‘Come to me cause I am easy!’

Eu sei que vocês andam aí. Eu sei que vocês me lêem. Comentem. Participem, contestem, concordem, adicionem algo. Quero ver-vos a participar.

I know that you are around here. I know that you read me. Comments, please. If there is something that feeds a blog it is readers’ comments. I want you to participate, contest, agree, add something. I want to see you participating. You were Time Magazine's ‘Person of the Year’, show me why. This is not a desperate cry for participation, but only an incentive for your feedback as active participants in this interactive world of the Internet.

However, there were some bloggers
that didn't buy the story at all. Be it because they do not feel included in the web 2.0 wave, or because they don't see the phenomenon as sufficiently broad, or even because they don't believe that most of “you!” are prepared to be in charge of creating valuable content.

Time: Person of the year.

I side with Odete and others on the list of people who refuse the Time Magazine award: Person of the Year. I don't deserve it, I do not have the required profile. I think the award should go to someone else. I don't know HTML, I don't know what a podcast is, I don't speak French, I don't know how to use Opera browser, I don't use MySpace, I don't like Bob Dylan, and… the truth must be said: I don't like sex during morning time. Well, I've said it. Thank you all from the Magazine, but I refuse the reward. Excuse me, goodbye.

There is no logic in the whole thing, other than to chose someone who is visibly in the news in order to sell more magazines, lots of magazines. Answer quickly: what would generate more sales? A cover with Hu Jintao, or this one which arrived on newsstands with the mirror to reflect ‘you’ in place of ‘The Person of the Year'? I don't see anything wrong with Time's strategy. I myself have invented worst things to guarantee my job. What worries me – a lot – is the discourse over which the marketing strategy is mounted. This story of saying that the reader has won over journalism and taken over the controls of modern media — ‘You, and not us, are transforming the information age’, declares the Time's editor — this idea of providing voice to people with nothing to say, handing production tools to people who don't know how to do it, comes out like this: nobody has done anything outstanding in 2006. So we focus on the possibility of making it. Come on, any stupid one is capable of doing it.’ by Tutty Vasquez.

Time Magazine has made a bizarre choice to 2006's Person of the Year. It has chosen us, the Internauts, by our pleasurable activity, presenting the example of the creators of the famous YouTube, who managed to win in a market stifled by big tech innovation companies like Microsoft or Google. We won't waste time explaining how unique is YouTube's case, in order to [cast] doubt about the over-appreciation of rewarding a whole ‘generation’ because of its natural adaptation to the times they live in (information, Internet, etc.), the majority obviously achieving [only the] small profits that are strictly personal and ego massaging. Time Magazine's choice starts making sense when we know that in an online poll, Magazine readers prefered to have as ‘Person of the Year’ the controversial Hugo Chavez (35%) followed by Iran's president (21%). Thus the magazine which had wisely chosen Hitler as ‘Person of the Year’ in 1939, knew how to deal with the disconfort of having to make the obvious choice this year, charming the audience who, with the reward hanging on the chest, will never doubt about the magazine's impartiality.

Indeed, the loudest noise
over the choice of ‘You’ erupted as bloggers spread the information that the online poll on Time's website was easily won by Hugo Chavez. The contradiction was exposed and debated during the week as more bloggers became aware of the situation.

The problem is that the so called ‘Internet users’ i.e., us, the ones who were aware about the online poll on the Magazine's website, we went there to vote for … Hugo Chavez. Me too, and my wife also. Maybe many of you have done that also, and the same has occurred in many countries. When the day of closing the poll arrived, Hugo Chavez had won with 36% of the vote, followed by Iran's President Mahmoud Ahadinejad with 21%. To put it simply: now we all are gonna pretend that the voting on the site was not even important, and to help throwing sand in your eyes, we elect you as ‘Person of the Year’.

Despite all the buzz around the choice of ‘You’ as ‘Person of the Year’, the result should have been different. Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's President, was the one to be elected person of the year in 2006. That would have been if the Magazine had followed the ‘You'!. Or the readers of the Magazine's website who participated in the poll to elect the person of the year. But Time has decided to leave the ‘YOU!'s choice aside. For marketing reasons, and not to lose contact with BBC, which elected the ‘citizen journalist’ as the person of the year in 2005, Time Magazine has declared ‘YOU!’ as person of the year in 2006.

And now all the big media vehicles collectively deny that they are on control of the information, trying to convince us that we already reached the top of citizen [controlled] democracy through our computer and the subscription to an Internet connection. And they commit the obscenity of doing it by arguing over an election that was fabricated over the decision of the same community that they nominate as the most powerful of the year.

The episode offers
a good indication of the problems that the traditional media will face while trying to adapt to empowered users. The transition will surely demand a new approach, which appears to be in early emergent stages but has not achieved maturity at this time.

Chavez, Time, e o personagem do anoCódigo Aberto

Time Magazine has payed the price of web socialization. From the moment that it opens the door for popular participation it's impossible to foresee what will happen, because the media has lost contact with its public but they are still denying this fact, as shown by many comments posted by readers of ‘Codigo Aberto’. The voting achieved by Chavez resulted from a campaign from many bloggers and political groups from within and outside the US, as can be seen in blogs like the Canadian Observer. This is just an example, there are many [more]. In scientific terms, the online polls are far from being qualified as an accurate picture of reality. They can function as a window through which a segment of the crowd can manage to express its opinion. But as Time decided to use it, the minimum [requirement] would be to publish the results, and not hide it in a link that became known only after left bloggers divulged it. However, the problem is wider than a simple editorial error or political mismanagement. The episode sheds new light over the media dilemmas while confronting web 2.0 consequences. The transformation of the citizen in a peer-to-professional in the information process is just starting, and we will probably have still many other surprises.

It's impressive that the choice of the internaut as ‘the person of the year’ said nothing to the American publication about it's behavior of omitting the true result of the ‘contest’ for the simple fact of disliking the outcome. It will take maybe years, still, for traditional media to become aware that the building has collapsed, of simply put, that the Internet has put an end to the ages where the ordinary citizen would remain shut in front of the press. Today, in any part of the world, the humblest of the citizens can go to a lan house and pay US$ 1 and ‘talk’ to hundreds, thousands of people. Nobody will be able to edit his message. Nobody will be able to control what he will say. For the good and for the bad. Considering the bad which can come out of such a situation, it will always be a small price to pay for the freedom of expression made possible by the Internet.
