Malaysia: Sex Education in Schools

Cakap Tak Serupa Bikin asks couple of questions after reading about the proposed introduction of sex education in Malaysian schools. “Since the education minister is adamant that sex education will be incorporated into these subjects and will begin by January 2007, would the teachers have sufficient time to digest the knowledge and skills to impart them to the pupils who are school children?”

I think it’s a great move by the government to implement sex education in schools. However, just as important as the development of the guidelines is the group of teachers recruited or trained to teach young people on such an issue. It is easy to give facts but very difficult to separate facts and cultural/personal values. Teachers of sex education must be able to put their values aside and provide accurate and unbias information to young people. Will we be able to deliver that?

Why is it that the Education Department do not do checks and see what is the results of countries which have done Sex Education and yet statistics shows that these 2 countries..US and UK…. which has implemented SEx Education for years..HAVE TEH HIGHEST RATE OF TEEN PREGNANCIES IN THE WORLD…..

SO, how do you quantify that this education works….or maybe it works but in the Negative way….more are aware about SEX…EARLIER so they have it sooner …

One Million Teen Pregnancies Each Year

    ——————————————————————————–
Although teen pregnancy and birth rates in the U.S. declined significantly during the 1990s, approximately 1 million American teenage girls still get pregnant each year. That is by far the highest rate of teen pregnancies of any industrialized nation — and eight out of 10 are unplanned, according to NCPTP figures. (See how many babies have been born to mothers under 15 so far this year.)

After rising 23% between 1972 and 1990, pregnancies among girls between the ages of 15 and 19 declined 17% between 1990 and 1996. The teen birth rate dropped by 20% between 1991 and 1999, to approximately 50 births per 1,000 young women.

It’s true that US is implementing sex ed and yet the rate of teen pregnancy is still among the highest, but this is due to the form of sex-ed they are implementing. the US implemented the abstinence-only form of sex ed which is now said to be not effective in curbing issues like teen pregnancy. they have found that the comprehensive form of sex-ed actually works better than abstinence only sex-ed. therefore in my opinion malaysia needs sex-ed but the main concern is how to implement it and not worrying whether we should or should not implement it, because the teens are in fact in dire need of the formal sex ed.

  • its really important 2 give a early education about sex to our kids, if our kids already know about their sex and the tresure that they have of coz they can avoid any sex offender!!! we can avoid what already happend to sharlini and nurin!!! come malaysian!!! we already late, late is better then never. we must do it!!! ASAP

The quality of sex educaton in schools in Malaysia is absolutely ATROCIOUS. All ty do is show us photos of infected genitals and expect us to not have sex until we get married. They don’t mention anything about condoms, morning after pills, and that they should practice safe sex.

Also, society treats the subject of sex as though it is taboo and that it’s dirty. This attitude has to change otherwise no matter how much you try to educate people about safe sex and condoms, people will treat condoms like they are disgusting and the very act of buying a packet of condoms is perverted.
