No Congress Debate for Abortion in Chile

Categories: Latin America, Chile, Governance, Health, Law, Politics

With 61 votes in favor, the lower house of the Chilean congress decided to not legalize abortion and declared it “unacceptable”. 21 votes were against there were 3 abstentions.

Quemarlasnaves [1] (ES) posts about the democratic sense that involved the decision:

The decision of the president of the chamber, with the support of the majority of the members, does not have constitutional justification and represent a precedent that can be extremely damaging for the democratic practice.

The letter continues and in the end, they post their legal view of the situation:

The last thing, with this declaration the real reason of the decision is hidden for the public opinion. The true reason is political: the majority of the actual deputies are against the decriminalization of abortion. They are trying to pass a political decision as a legal one

“The world by Leal” is the title that Rodrigo [2] (ES) choose to express his disagreement. Antonio Leal [3] (ES) is the President of the lower house. He continues, explaining:

I’m not in favour of abortion, however, I'm also against of not being able to debate issues; that we cant talk about certainly things, because we are not ready, because it's not the right moment etc.”

About pain caused by the debate, Pablo [2] (ES) wrote:

Esperamos recuperarnos”.

The pain of seeing something start as a good idea go to the trash can is indescribable. I was going to mention somethin related to abortion, but an unexpected and definitely recent feeling of the position obstructs me. Still, it hurts. I hope that we recover.
