The Arabs are as usual busy this week debating anything and everything, from plagiarism to the arrest of bloggers, and from banning public meetings to embarrising George Bush Senior at a conference held in the UAE.
Ahmed from Egypt had always wanted to become a journalist. But because not all dreams come true, he had to settle for writing online when he stumbled upon the enchanting world of blogging. His love affair for the Press, however, was cut short, after discovering that an Egyptian newspaper was lifting articles from his blog (needless to say without his permission) and posting them as letters to the editor, under different names.

فتخيلت أني سأكون صحفي شريف,ولكن لظروف متعددة لم يكن الحلم ولكن عندما عثرت على كنز التدوين،
تخيلت يومها أنني عثرت على كنزي الصغير الذي سأستخرج منه كل ما أحب، ولو كان هذا الكنز لين
يراه غيري أو سيتستفيد منه الكثيرون
ولكن قلت إنها لفرصة عضيمة أخرج فيها ما أريد حتى لا أنفجر غيظا على الاقل…
ولكن أن أجد سبع مواضيع في صفحة واحدة في جريدة الميدان في صفحة “البوسطجي” للمحرر باهر
السليمي وكلها منقولة نقل مسطرة من مدونتي المتواضعة
أي والله 7 مواضيع بسبع أسماء مستعارة في صفحة واحدة
ولا أتخيل أن يكون هناك 7 لصوص صغار أعجبهم مواضيع لي فنشورها في الميدان في نفس الوقت في
نفس الصفحة
يا خبر, إذن إنه لص واحد أراد ملئ صفحة واحدة فأخذذ سبع مواضيع مني ووضع عليها سبع أسماء
من عنده ومن سبع مناطق مختلفة ونشرها
“My dream as a child was to become a famous writer who defended people, carried their burdens on his shoulders and protected our values and principles with my writings. I thought I would be an ethical journalist but because of different circumstances, I couldn't achieve my dream. When I discovered blogging, I realised that I have found my dream, which will enable me to do all that I have loved and that it would benefit others. I thought it would be a good opportunity to express myself so that I don't explode with anger. But to find seven of my articles in one page in a newspaper called Al Maydan in the Letters to the Editor page, all lifted from my modest blog, (is unacceptable). I swear there are seven articles all under different names on one page in the paper. I can't imagine there being seven small thieves who liked my articles and published them all in the newspaper at the same time on the same page. So it must be one thief who wanted to fill one page so he took seven of my articles and inserted seven different names from seven different areas and published them,” he wrote.
In support of Ahmed, Masri, is concerned about pressures put on bloggers by both the State and others who think it is fine to ‘steal’ articles from blogs.

روسيا البيضاء و بورما و الصين و كوبا و مصر و إيران و كوريا الشمالية و المملكة العربية السعودية و سوريا و تونس و تركمانستان أوزباكستان و فييتنام
و يمكن أن يسوء التصنيف بعد خامس حالة إعتقال خلال سنة في صفوف المدونين حيث تم إعتقال المدون رامي صيام الناشط بحركة كفاية و المدون ( مدونة أبو أيوب المصري ) و سبقه خلال السنة علاء و محمد الشرقاوي و مالك مصطفى و عبد الكريم نبيل
“The Bloggers community (in Egypt) faces two dangers – one from the security forces and the other from plagiarism. Therefore, you can consider bloggers exposed to the dangers of being arrested as well as having all their efforts and hard work stolen from them without their permission and without giving them any credit. Egypt was among the worse 13 countries which censor the Internet and blogs according to Reporters Without Borders. The 13 countries on the blacklist are: Russia, Burma, China, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. This rating for Egypt could now become worse after a fifth blogger has been arrested in a year.

Mohammed Al Sharqawi,
Malik Mustafa and
Abdulkarim Nabeel have also been arrested,” he explains.
The Moroccans too have their issues with blogs as Hjiouij points out.
بداية أعترف، أنا جد مقصر في تتبع الجرائد اليومية المغربية وذلك لمستواها الهزيل ومحتواها الذي لا يشبع حاجياتي. وجدت اليوم في موقع جديد حول المدونات المغربية إشارة إلى حوار مع المدون المغربي المنتمي إلى حزب العدالة والتنمية محمد لشيب، نشر يوم 16/11/2006. تحدث فيه عن مستوى المدونات المغربية وفترة “المراهقة” التي تعيشها. حوار قيم وإن كنت أجد نفسي مضطرًا إلى التنويه بأن محمد لشيب إعتمد في أجوبته على جمل كاملة من مقالي (سلطة التدوين) كما هي.
“First of all, I would like to admit that I don't follow Moroccan daily newspapers because their standards are low and don't meet my needs. While surfing the net today, I found a reference to an interview with a Moroccan blogger who is a member in the Justice and Development Party, Mohammed Lashbeeb, which was published on November 16,2006. He said that the Moroccan blogs were experiencing an adolescence. It is an interesting dialogue but I feel compelled to say that Mohammed Lashbeeb depended on his answers on sentences which he took from my article (The Power of Blogging), word to word,” he wrote.

From threats to blogs and bloggers, we move on to the banning conferences and public gatherings in Amman, Jordan where Batir Wardam is not pleased that the Jordanian authorities have banned a conference being held on the sidelines of one of the activities held as part of the Forum for the Future ,which is being hosted by his country.
كل التنظير الذي نسمعه ونقرأه يوميا عن الإصلاح السياسي والتعددية والمشاركة الشعبية في الأردن يصطدم بواقع مرير هو الذهنية العرفية التقليدية التي تسود صناعة القرار في بعض المؤسسات الهامة في الأردن، وفي الكثير من الحالات يتم اتخاذ قرارات غير منطقية وغير مدروسة تساهم في تشويه سمعة العمل العام والديمقراطي.
مثال واضح على ذلك هو قرار محافظ العاصمة بمنع إنعقاد الملتقى المناهض لمنتدى المستقبل والذي تقوم بتنظيمه مجموعة من النقابات والأحزاب ومؤسسات المجتمع المدني وهو عبارة عن مؤتمر أكاديمي ثقافي يحمل فكرا مناهضا ومختلفا عن فكر منتدى المستقبل والمؤتمر الموازي له الذي تنظمه بعض مؤسسات المجتمع المدني. هذا المنع غير مبرر وحتى لو كان مستندا إلى صلاحيات المحافظ الممنوحة بموجب قانون الاجتماعات العامة فهو يشكل إساءة إلى سمعة الديمقراطية والمشاركة الشعبية في الأر
“All the theories we hear and read on political reform, multiple parties and public participation in Jordan collides with a sad reality which is the traditional mentality which controls decision-makers in some important organisations in Jordan. In many cases, illogical decisions, which have not been carefully studied, are taken and which in turn tarnish the reputation of our democracy. An example of this is the decision made by the Capital's Mayor to ban the NGO meeting being organised by unions and civil societies on the sidelines of the
Forum for the Future. The proposed meeting was expected to be an academic and cultural gathering which will result in different recommendations than those expected from the Forum, which is also being organised by other civil societies. This ban has no excuse and even if it is part of the Mayor's jurisdiction, it harms the reputation of democracy in Jordan,” he said.
And last but not least, Omar Al Azbi from Jordan tells us about how George Bush Senior was bombarded with questions during a conference held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

“Former US President George Bush head harsh criticism of his son's the current US President's policies in the Gulf, Middle East and Afghanistan, which made him depart from his sense of humour during a lecture he delievered at the the World Leaders Conference held in Abu Dhabi. He was surprised by a comment by a UAE student who stood up in front of more than 1,500 top officials, dignitaries and delegates and said: Mr President. We in the UAE highly respect America and all Americans. We respect your values and culture. But frankly, beginning with my 75-year-old mother to my six year old daughter, including myself and my name is Amna Al Rumaithi, a student at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, have no respect for your son President George Bush because he has destroyed out people and countries and is continuing to speak about freedom, values, human rights, peace and justice,” he wrote.
