Welcome back for our THIRD roundup of the Esperanto blogosphere! (Did you miss the first [4] or second [5]?) This month, I thought we would visit Esperantoland through pictures. I've chosen a handful of the pictures from the Esperantujo Flickr group [6] that offer a sense of the richness and diversity of the worldwide Esperanto community. Read more to learn about the picture above!

On the 20th of May, 2006, in Frankfurt at Main, is the Parade of Cultures, a traditional event, which is organized by the various youth organizations together. In Frankfurt and surrounding communities there are inhabitants from more than 100 countries for whom the parade is an occasion to publically show their culture. But it also provides an opportunity for other organizations in the city, for example, the esperantists. In front of our group marched a dance-ensemble from a Bolivian cultural organization.
During the World Congress there is also a Children's Congress where kids from many countries meet one another and speak in Esperanto. On the 3rd of August, the Children's Congress visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Bert Schumann provided an actual photo diary [8] of the whole day (and, in fact, the whole congress), including the trip on the bus and pictures showing the children trying to “hold up” the leaning tower.
Esperanto isn't just for the young, however. This is a picture of Sally Lawton and my mom, Lucy Brewer at an Esperanto meeting in Quincy at a Brazilian churrascaria restaurant. There's a small Esperanto group of elderly ladies that meets every week in Northampton, but for this weekend, they drove to Quincy to meet esperantists from the eastern part of the state and a visitor from Texas, Anderson “nehundo” Mills. For my mom, Esperanto has been a link to a supportive community of friends both near and far away.
Esperanto was proposed in an age when it seemed like there really was A language problem. L.L. Zamenhof, who created Esperanto, believed, if not that miscommunication caused war, at least that genuine understanding among people was a precondition of peace. He recognized that Esperanto wasn't sufficient for peace, but with understanding as a precondition, he believed it offered the best chance. Nowadays, raw comprehension is less the problem than creating a just and sustainable system that will help the world move toward equity, anstataŭ than our current path that reifies and exacerbates pre-existing inequalities. Oni proponis Esperanton dum epoko kiam ŝajnis ke ja estis nur unu lingvo problemo. L. L. Zamenhof, kiu kreis Esperanton, kredis ke, se militon ne kaŭzis miskompreno, almenaŭ ke vera interkompreniĝo estis necesa antaŭkondiĉo por paco. Li rekonis ke Esperanto ne sufiĉis por paco, sed ofteris la plej bonan ŝancon. Nuntempe, nura komprenado estas malpli grava problemon ol la bezono starigi justan kaj daŭripovan sistemon kiu helpos la mondon iri al egaleco, anstataŭ nia nuna pado, kiu subtenas kaj pligrandigas la jam ekzistantajn malegalecojn.
From the beginning, esperantists have struck a balance between inwardly-focused activity that contribute to the Esperanto community and culture — such as writing stories, poems and books; translating works from other cultures into Esperanto; and organizing conferences and meetings — and outwardly-focused activity that helps others to learn about Esperanto and it's values — activism, research, public relations, and international legislative action. In 1996, a proclamation in Prague, the Prague Manifesto [10], expressed a set of 7 goals for the Esperanto community. Below are a few pictures of people trying to put these principles into action.
Antono kaj Zmitro [12]
In March, there was a large protest in Belarus after the presidential elections. Over a period of several days, a tent-camp was set up in this plaza, but on the night of the 20th, the police came in and arrested everyone. In this picture, Antono (on the left) brought in provisions to the tent camp and Zmitro, on the right, was imprisoned for two weeks for participating in the protests.
Finally, here is myself participating the Amherst Peace Vigil, a weekly protest against militarism that has been taking place for 30 years. I include the picture, not only because I thought it was cool, but also because it brings up another long debate within the Esperanto community related to neutrality. Esperanto proposes itself as politically neutral. When this picture it first appeared at the Esperanto-USA website, it caused some to question whether it represented taking sides in a political debate. But it's long been recognized that just the idea of communicating internationally is not a neutral idea. This has been called the “internal idea” of Esperanto. Valuing discussion over destruction is not a neutral position, but represents an active kind of neutrality, that Esperanto values.
Check back next month for my Esperanto-Day posting, in which I'll look at a language problem from my perspective. See you then!
