China: Best of the blocked

Nominations for this year's Best of the Blogs have been set and votes can be cast now. Here's part of 23 year-old nominee Zeng Jinyan‘s—her MSN Spaces blog has been blocked in China since late summer—thank you post [zh] from earlier this week:

In the midst of travelling, it was only on October 28 I saw that a Deutsche Welle employee had sent me an e-mail regarding the Best of the Blogs (BOBs) that I knew that I had been nominated for the Reporters Without Borders special award. Time was tight, so I didn't pay much attention at the time, just felt that there must have been many others from China nominated much braver, with stronger consciences and better writing than me. I even suspected that Deutsche Welle might have made a mistake…haha

I finished writing Bombay's Shanghai Dream [zh], then suddenly thought to Google up Chinese information on the BOBs. What I've noticed that's interesting is that [portal news site] Sina also has reports on the BOBs, which made mention of the links for ‘Wanton World’, ‘Extremely Real Person’, ‘Han Han's Blog’, ‘Chai Jing's Blog’ and others nominated. Blogs that focus on topics like news, politics, society or sex didn't have their links listed, never mind my blog, the wife of a long-term house arrestee's diary portrayal of daily life. What's Sina trying to accomplish with this? I don't know. Maybe it's too sensitive. I immediately thought of the blind lawyer Chen Guangcheng; he was chosen as one of the One Hundred People Shaping the World by America's Time magazine. Many mainstream Chinese media reported this by saying there had been a total of five ethnic Chinese chosen within Time's ‘One Hundred People Shaping the World’, Wen Jiabao, Huang Guangyu, Ang Lee, Ma Jun, respectively, blocking out the pioneer and good-conscienced Chen Guangcheng's name.

I checked it out, ‘Sage’ is a brave and strong young woman who, in the process of battling sickness, shares meals and happiness with everybody. Pretty not bad. I was pleasantly surprised to see that she graduated from China's Renmin University, making her my senior sister.

Han Han was born in 1982. One year older than me, he was my idol in high school. The influence he left is quite deep. Back in high school, when I finished reading his book, I felt depressed. People that smart, still in their teens and able to do what most can't accomplish in a lifetime. I just went back to my life, doing as I was supposed to in bitterly preparing for the university entrance exam, fearing a life with no prospects like his. Due to a history of heart disease, during preparation for the exam, I received notice that I might not pass the physical examination, with no chance of ever going to university. Actually it was the school education defector Han Han's inspiration that led me to take a deep breath and remember that not going to university was not an option. Finally just before the physical examination I took my medicine and “trained” and then succeeded in getting into university.

As for my blog [zh], it's been blocked. On the mainland, with no tools (proxy servers) to break through the internet, there's no way to read it. If people living on the mainland can't read my blog stories, the significance in being nominated has been passively downgraded. For Chinese locked up by the Great Firewall, this is the reality.

Guangzhou-based web news editor and blogger Wen Yunchao has been busy preparing the the full set of stories in the latest edition of Net News This Week [zh], which he writes straight to his blog:

Leaked Celebrity Phone Numbers ‘Latest Edition’

A list of the phone numbers and addresses of nearly four hundred people from the entertainment field has been making the rounds on the internet recently, and some media have determined the accuracy of the list to be nearly ninety percent accurate. Like June last year when the phone numbers of six hundred celebrities were leaked, the recently-published list shows that some phone numbers, despite having been exposed, still haven't been changed. Law professor Ye Lin recommends those involved seek to have the relevant websites delete the list. “If the websites or ISPs haven't taken steps to remedy the situation, they'll have no choice but to take responsibility for spreading others’ personal information.”

Urban Eavesdrop-Recording The New Fad

Since netizen ‘Small Knife Cuts the Rain’ posted ‘Eavesdrop Beijing—A City's Unintentional and True Secrets’ on the Tianya forum, the ‘Eavesdrop City’ fad has taken right off, with ‘Eavesdrop Guangzhou‘, ‘Eavesdrop Changsha‘, ‘Eavesdrop Chongqing‘, ‘Eavesdrop Shanghai’ and more appearing one-by-one and the trend shows no signs of slowing down. So-called ‘Eavesdrop City’ refers to the act of listening to the content of people's conversations held in public places, making note of the time and place, and posting it online for readers to enjoy. The issue has attracted some controversy, with supporters seeing these as the most truthful sorts of records and expression. Opponents see it as vulgar and meaningless spreading of harmful culture and impingement upon privacy. However, most netizens taking part are just having fun.

Imitation Google mp3 Search Site

On the evening of October 31, someone at Donews [zh] posted an announcement that Google had released an mp3 search engine at www.gugemp3.com. A Google China [“Guge”] spokesperson declared this to be someone imitating Guge in setting up the website. Google China currently has no plans for the release of an mp3 search engine, and is in the process of investigating this fake mp3 search engine incident. Not long after, an ‘About This Site’ appeared on this site's main page, apologizing to Google China for any negative effects it might have brought them. It also removed the original content and no longer provides mp3 search services. If Firefox 2.0 is used to visit the site, a message appears: ‘this page has already been reported for maliciously entrapping users into revealing personal or financial information. The entering of any personal information could possibly result in ID theft and other fraudulent behavior.”

MySpace “Clears Out Illegal Documents”

MySpace community networking website is preparing to use technological means to prevent users from uploading ‘all rights reserved’ music files onto their own web pages. The technology MySpace plans to use comes from a company called Gracenote, and will both scan for and screen illegal files saved on the website, removing any materials being distributed without permission. Their spokesperson says, as soon as scanning notices illegal files, all these files will be removed. Registered users who repeatedly violate the regulation will be barred from MySpace. This website is reported to have ninety million users.

The State Strictly Inspects Illegal Download Providers

The media reports that the State Copyright Office, the Ministry of Information Industry, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Public Security and other related departments are preparing to launch a special three-month long attack on internet copyright infringements, taking aim at illegal operation websites making profits from providing movies, music, software and textbooks for the free downloading. Until now, the State Copyright Office has relied on tips in tracking down 302 cases, then sent to local copyright authorities for processing. Reportedly, unauthorized American movies can still be used online, although the majority in China have not received this authorization.

  • […] Stem cell research—it’s an old topic, but it’s also a top topic, at least for today as two key Chinese public intellectuals—one a tv news personality and the other a crusader against intellectual fraud and traditional Chinese medicine—battle it out on their PhoenixTV blogs. […]
