While Arab bloggers writing in English jumped on the opportunity to comment on Saddam Hussein‘s death sentence, those writing in Arabic seemed to be slower to react.
Among the few commenting on the story making the headlines yesterday and today, Batir Wardam from Jordan, says what is more important than hanging Saddam Hussein now is protecting Iraq.
ربما يستحق صدام حسين الإعدام في مقياس العدالة المجردة فقد تسبب في قتل آلاف الناس وتدمير حياة آلاف الأسر، ولكن هناك من تسبب بقتل 650 ألف عراقي في ثلاث سنوات وهناك من تسبب في نهب الثروة الطبيعية للعراق وهؤلاء يجب أيضا أن يقدموا للمحاكمة وهم يزيدون سوءا وإجراما عن صدام حسين لأنهم تسببوا في تدمير دولة ومجتمع كامل.
للأسف ستكون الأيام القادمة مليئة بحملات تأييد ودعم لدكتاتور روع آلاف الناس في العراق، وسيستمر احتلال العراق وقتل مواطنيه والصراع الطائفي والعنف الانتقامي من التنظيمات البعثية، وفي النهاية سوف يدفع المواطن العراقي وحده الثمن. المواطن العراقي العادي هو الذي دفع ثمن سكوت العالم العربي على جرائم صدام وهو الذي يدفع الآن ثمن الاحتلال الأميركي ووحشية التنظيمات الطائفية، والعراق الذي هو أهم مليون مرة من صدام حسين معرض هو الآخر للإعدام فهل يمكن لأحد أن ينق
“Saddam Hussein perhaps deserves to be hanged because in the eyes of abstract justice he was instrumental in murdering thousands of people and destroying the lives of thousands of families.
“But there are others who have caused the death of 650,000 Iraqis in three years as well as those who stole Iraq's natural wealth and those too should be put on trial as they are more criminal than Saddam Hussein. After all, they are responsible for the destruction of a country and an entire community.
“It is a pity that the next few days will be full of support for a dictator who has struck fear in the lives of thousands of people in Iraq but the occupation of Iraq, the killing of its people, the sectarian strife and the retaliation against the
Baathist organisations will continue.
“At the end of the day, it is the Iraqi citizen who pays the price. It is the ordinary Iraqi citizen who pays the price of the silence of the Arab world on Saddam's crimes and it is that citizen who is now paying the price of living under American occupation and the brutality of sectarian organisations. Iraq, which is a million times more important than Saddam Hussein, is being hanged too so is there anyone willing to rescue it?” wrote Wardam.
Another Jordanian blogger Kamel Al Nsirat says the verdict has made Saddam Hussein a martyr in the eyes of Arabs, whether the noose is tightened around his neck or not.
Al Nsirat gives us a description of his infatuation with the former Iraqi president and the impact the verdict has had on him in the following few paragraphs.
من الآن ..سيغدو صدّام شهيداً ..حتى وإن لم يمت شنقاً ..فهذا الرجل ..خطف قلوب الشعوب العربيّة ولو أدانته مليون محكمة ..محبوب لدرجة الاستمتاع بصورته حتى وهو لا يتكلّم ..!! هيبته هي هي ..مع كل مراحل الإهانات التي تعرّض لها منذ اعتقاله إلى النطق بالحكم عليه أمس ..!!
كان الشهيد صدّام هنا ..يلعب مع أطفالنا ..وهذه ابنتي ( بغداد ) والتي يا دوب تجاوزت السنتين بأيّام ..ها هي كلّما أمسكتْ جريدة فيها صورة صدّام ..تخطفها وتركض بها عليّ : بابا..صدّام ..!! وكعادتي ابتسم في وجهها ..فتبوس الصورة وتأمرني أن أبوسها وتقول بلسانها الطفولي : بوسها زيي..فأصدع لأمرها وأبوسها ..!! ولا أذكر أن أحداً علّم طفلتي ذلك ..من أين جاءتها الفكرة ..لا أعلم ..؟! ولكن الذي أعلمه ..كيف إذا نشروا بعد وقت صورة الشهيد صدّام وهو يتدلّى بحبل المشنقة ..ماذا سأقول لها حينها ..؟؟ طنيب عليكم واحداً واحداً ..وأنا جادٌ في طنبي ..إذا وجد أحدكم طريقة أجيب بها على سؤال طفلتي ..فليقترحه عليّ ..فلا أريد لها أن ترى حبيبها الأوّل وقد قتلوه بهذه الطريقة ..!!
أعتذر منكم شديد الاعتذار ..لا يوجد لديّ ما أقوله ..أفكاري تتجمّد ..وكلماتي تعيش لحظات قاسية ..أعتذر ..فأنا رغم استعدادي النفسي لذلك الحكم ..إلاّ ..إنني غير قادر على لملمة حالي ..!
“From now onwards Saddam will be a martyr, wherther he was hanged or not. This man has stolen the hearts of all Arabs, even if a million courts found him guilty. He is loved to the extent that people love to see his photograph, even if he doesn't say anything. He is composed despite all the humiliation he has faced since his arrest until the verdict was passed yesterday. The martyr Saddam used to play with our children. This is my daughter Baghdad, who is barely two years old, snatching the newspaper away from me everytime it had Saddam's picture in it and running ‘Papa Papa..Saddam!!’ She would then kiss the photograph and order me to kiss it like she did so I do. I don't recall anyone teaching that to my daughter. I really don't know where she got that idea from. But what I know is once they publish his photograph dangling from a rope, what will I tell her? Can someone tell me how to answer my little girl? I dont want her to see her first love being killed in such a way. I would like to apologise to you.. I don't have anything else to say. My thoughts are paralysed. My words are living their worst conditions. Despite being prepared for this verdict, I still cannot get a grip on myself,” he wrote.
From Algeria, Rasheed Wald Bu Siafa says the hanging of Saddam signifies the death of Arab dignity.
قد لا يشكل إصدار حكم في حق الرئيس العراقي صدام حسين حدثا هاما للبعض لكنه حلقة مهمة في مسلسل إعدام الكرامة العربية التي بدأت بإسقاط تمثاله بتلك الطريقة الهوليودية ثم إخراجه بنفس الطريقة من حفرة عرضها 1 متر، ثم عرضه على طبيب ليفحصه بطريقة غير آدمية، انتهاء بمسرحية المحاكمة التي تحالف فيها الادعاء مع القاضي والشهود ضد الرئيس العربي الوحيد الذي تحدى أمريكا وقصف إسرائيل ولم يفر إلى الخارج عندما تهاوت أركان نظامه.
“News of the verdict on Iraqi president Saddam Hussein may not be important for some but it is a significant link in the hanging of Arab dignity which started with the destruction of his statue in a Hollywood fashion, getting him out of a hole measuring one metre in width, examining him by a doctor in an inhumane way and ending with the farce which was his trial where the prosecution, judge and witnesses ganged up against the only Arab president who stood against the United States, bombed Israel and did not escape abroad when he lost his power,” he pointed.
The Algerian blogger continues in his defence of Saddam Hussein, comparing the situation in Iraq today with what it was under his days.
لم يكن صدام حسين يختلف عن غيره من الحكام العرب سوى في كبريائه ومروءته والتزامه بأفكاره ومبادئه بغض النظر إن كانت صائبة أم خاطئة، صدام لم يفتح بلاده للأجانب من أجل إقامة قواعد عسكرية عليها، ولم يطبع علاقاته مع إسرائيل ولم يتخل عن دعم القضية الفلسطينية حتى في أحلك مراحل عهده، ولم يدفع الملايير لتبرئة نفسه ولم يتصدق ببقايا برنامجه النووي لأمريكا…لما كان يحكم صدام لم تكن هناك فتنة بين السنة والشيعة ولم نسمع يوما عن الرؤوس المقطوعة والجثث المرمية في نهري دجلة والفرات، كما لم تصلنا صور شبيهة بما حدث في سجن أبو غريب في عهد الديمقراطية الأمريكية.
“Saddam Hussein was not different from the other Arab leaders except perhaps in his pride, manners and in standing by his principles, where they were right or wrong. Saddam did not open his country to foreigners to open military bases on them; he did not normalise his relations with Israel and did not give up his support to the Palestinian cause even at his darkest hours; he did not pay millions to show his innocence nor did he give up his nuclear programme as charity to the US. When Saddam was in power, there was no clash between the Sunnis and Shia; we never heard of heads and bodies in the rivers of Euphrates and Tigris and we never saw horrific photographs of torture like in the Abu Ghraib prison in the era of American democracy,” he added.
From Kuwait, Kuhaylan said that Saddam Hussein deserved more than death.
هل فعلا يستحق صدام حسين ا لاعدام؟؟
من وجهة نظري لايستحقه , لان من هم على شاكلة صدام واشباه من الحكام العرب وغير العرب المستبدين في حكمهم ,الطاغين على شعوبهم وجيرانهم الاعدام هو راحه لهم ونهاية لقصه طويله عنوانها اللعن والشتم والكره من الناس .
ان صدام بطبيعته الجاسره والمتكبره لم يثق في حياته باحد او عاش في هذه الدنيا من اجل ولد او طموح , هؤلاء الموت كان جزءا لايتجزأ من احلامهم فلماذا نأتي نحن ونكافأهم بتحقيق احلامهم !!
ان ما اتمناه ان يحكم على صدام وزبانيته هو اعطائهم جرع يوميه منتظمه من الغاز المضحك حتى يتلف الدماغ ويصبحوا كالقرود في السيرك , فلا يزجعوا العالم بابواقهم الاعلاميه او يرددوا شعاراتهم الرنانه وتهديداتهم المستمره , وافضل ايضا ان يخصصوا قنوات خاصه لهم بجودة القنوات الغنائيه التي تنشأ يوميا وان يعرضوا عليها لمدة 24 ساعه في اليوم 7 ايام في الاسبوع مباشره وحصريا على هذه القناه حتى يفضفض الناس عن همومهم باسدال اللعن والشتم عليهم وايضا لتنظيف شاشة التلفزيون بدون ماء فقط ب (…) , واتوقع النجاح الباهر والفضيع لهذه القناه , واول من سيعلن في هذه القناه هم من الحكام العرب الباقين من هم على شاكلة صدام
“Does Saddam deserve to die by hanging? In my opinion, he doesn't deserve it because hanging for tyrant Arab and non-Arab rulers like him, who have trespassed against their people and neighbours, would mean giving those people a chance to rest. People like Saddam have never trusted anyone and lived on their edge their entire lives so why should we now come and reward them for their brutality by allowing them to rest? The fate I hope for Saddam and his henchmen is giving them regular doses of laughter gas which will effect their brains gradually and make them act like monkeys in a circus. This was no one will be spreading their propoganda and repeating their mottos and threats. I would also prefer if they were put on a reality television show which was shown 24/7 to give people a chance to laugh at them and curse them. This channel will be a huge hit and the first to advertise in it will be the remaining Arab leaders who are like Saddam,” he said.
Iraqi blogger Ibn Al Basra (Son of Basra) doesn't hide his satisfaction with the verdict. But he says Iraq would need a miracle to heal.
بالامس تم نطق الحكم في حق المتهم ( المذنب ) صدام حسين المجيد. انها سابقة خطيرة في التأريخ العربي الحديث، انها ناقوس الخطر يدق في آذان كل الرؤساء العرب ( الي ما سكين بالكراسي بأيديهم وبأسنانهم، وكأنهم ورثوها من امهاتهم؟؟). لقد سقط صدام ، وسيسقط معلقا بالحبل الذي خنق به الشعب العراقي المظلوم عشرات السنين.
ابتسمت وانا استمع الى الخبر… واشاهد صدام وهو يرعد ويزبد ؟؟؟؟ ههههههههههههه ضحكت هذه المرة بقوة وبحرقة وكأنني انتقم من هذا الجلاد. ايباه ، قلت لنفسي …كان هذا المجرم البائس يحكم العراق بيد من نار وحديد وكان لا يرحم من يقع تحت يده ابدا،
ولكن السؤال يبقى؟
من سيعيد للعراق عافيته؟ من سيعيد لنا عمرنا الضائع؟ ومستقبلنا المفقود؟ من سيعيد لنا اقربائنا واخوتنا واحبائنا؟ من سيمحي من مخيلتنا سنوات القهر والظلم والارهاب؟ لا احد … لا احد .
“Yesterday, a verdict was issued on a guilty Saddam Hussein Al Majeed. It is a dangerous precident in modern Arab history. It is a bell ringing in the ears of all Arab leaders who are hanging on to power with their nails and teeth as if they have inherited them from their mothers. Saddam has fallen. And he will fall hanging from the rope he has used to suffocate the Iraqi people for decades. I smiled as I heard the news and saw Saddam trembling. Hahaha .. I laughed so hard as if I was getting back at this tyrant. I told myself that this criminal ruled Iraq with an iron fist. He did not show mercy to anyone who fell into his hands. The question which remains is: How will Iraq now recover? Who will return to us our lost lives? Who will give us our lost future? Who will return to us our relatives, brothers and loved ones? Who will protect our imagination fro the years of injustice and terrorism? No one.. No one!,” he wrote.
Another Iraqi blogger Rose Heart took to the streets after hearing the verdict and narrated to us the scenes of happiness and people distributing sweets after hearing about Saddam's fate.
فتحت الباب ودخلت مسرعة تفاجأت والدتي بعودتي وهي تعلم بأني اعود من الدراسة ليلا .عدت من اجل ان اشهد هذة اللحظة التي لن تتكرر مرّتين
ملايين الناس كانت تنتظر تلك اللحظة
وصدر الحكم بالأعدام شنقا حتى الموت
ملأت عيني الدموع تذكرت بريئا اعدمه نظام صدام شنقا حتى الموت بلاذنب جناه
وكان آية في الطهر والخلق
قيل لنا : خذوا جثة كلبكم .شنقوه فهو في نظر الحكومة لايستحق ثمن الرصاصة
ما اصغر الدنيا
ما اعدل السماء
اراد صدام ان يعدموه رميا بالرصاص لأنّه قائد عسكريّ ربما ليموت بسرعة ولا عذاب الشن
“My mother was surprised when I got home early because she knew that I went to evening classes. I returned home to witness this moment in history which will not be repeated twice. Millions of people were waiting for the moment when the verdict against Saddam will be announced. My eyes swelled with tears as I remembered an innocent man Saddam's regime hanged for no reason. They told us: take your dog! They hanged him because in the eyes of the government, we wasn't worth the price of a bullet. What a small world! What a just sky! Saddam has wanted to be punished with a firing squad because he was a military leader. Perhaps he wanted to die fast, without suffering,” she wrote.
انا لايعني لي شيئا اعدامه او حياته فقد زال لكنّي وددت لو انّهم اطلقوا سراحه وتركوه مسلوب الملك ونفوه ولأضاعوه كما اضاع الناس في هذا البلد
كما اضاع زمني واضاع شباب ملايين الناس غيري
قبل اعلان الحكم كان هناك صمت يسبق العاصفة ايدي على الزناد وايدي تحمل علب الحلوى
وبعد النطق بالحكم حمل اهل الضحايا البنادق والمسدسات واطلقوا النار ابتهاجا وفرحا وخرجت الامهات الثكالى الى الشوارع تلقي الحلوى وتوزعها على المارّة
“Saddam's life or death doesn't mean anything to me. I had hoped they would release him to see how he can survive without power and see how he would be lost, just as he has made millions of people of my generation lose their youth. Before the verdict was announced, the world fell silent – just like the silence before a storm. Some fingers were on the triggers and others carrying candy boxes. After the announcement, the families of victims started firing in happiness and mothers were on the streets distributing sweets on passers-by,” explained Rose.
Just like all the other bloggers before her, Rose's concern goes beyond Saddam.

“I don't care about his life or death because all I worry about is what is the United States hiding for us? There is no point in any judgement passed on him,” she said.
