Tanzania: blogging the Rwanda genocide tribunal

Categories: Sub-Saharan Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania, Human Rights, Law, War & Conflict

A Walk on the Wild Side writes about his experience [1] at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda [2] in Arusha [3], Tanzania, “The case I was attached to is often refered to as Military II and contains two of the biggest genocide suspects the Tribunal has nabbed so far- Augustin Bizimungu (who was chief of staff of the Rwandan army during the genocide) and Francois Ndindiyilimana (who was head of the Gendarmes) plus Francois Nzuwonemeye and Innocent Sagahutu who were also high-ranking military officers. The most astonishing thing about this case is how enthusiastically the defence is completely bungling up their case. Some of the incompetence on show over the last few weeks has been a marvel to behold.
