With labour union elections coming up soon in Egypt, Manal and Ala are reporting about labour strike in Ain Shams University, where salaries were almost halved.

وفقا لكفاية قررت ادارة جامعة عين شمس تخفيض أساسي مرتبات بعض العاملين من 220 جنيه الي 134 جنيه (معنديش فكرة بعد حساب الاضافات و المافئات الموظفين دول بياخدوا كام لكن المؤكد أنك لو عندك عبد هتصرف عليه أكثر من 134).
Along the lines of the social classes crisis which has been rocking the nation for about five years and which has reached its peak this year with the labour union elections dates coming closer, a strike with a difference started today. According to
Kifaya, the Ain Shams University administration decided to drop basic salaries of some staff from 220 pounds a month to around 134 pounds. I don't have an exact idea how much that would be if you account for other allowances but what I am sure of is that if you had a slave, you would be certainly spending more than 134 pounds a month on him.
Kifaya as some of you may already know is a national Egyptian movement which is calling for democratic reforms in Egypt.
Away from the great Nile and to a small Island kingdom called Bahrain, Khalid Qambar writes about workers’ right from another perspective and is angry (as should everyone else be) at the widespread practice of ferrying foreign workers in open trucks “like cattle.”
Following recent accidents in which some workers were hurled out of open trucks into the street, where several were injured – many with serious injuries – Khalid wonders whether the practice is tolerated because officials in his country turn a blind eye to it.
إن استخدام هذه الشاحنات المكشوفة أو النصف مكشوفة لنقل العمال ليس سرا بل هو يجرى كل يوم صباحا أو مساء وتحت أنظار الجميع وخاصة تحت أنظار إدارة المرور و الترخيص المعنية بالسلامة المرورية سوى كانت المركبات أو الطريق ..ولكن هذه الشاحنات بالتأكيد ليست مهيأة لنقل أكوام البشر و العمال …!!! بشهادة المسؤوليين في وزارة العمل قسم السلامة المهنية ..!!! فقد صرح احدهم بأن نقل العمال في شاحنات مكشوفة يعد خرقا فاضحا للقانون ومدعاة للمسائلة القانونية….!!! كما علق احدهم على هذا الأمر بأن شبه العمال في الشاحنات المكشوفة بالماشية التي تقاد أو تنقل إلى المسلخ …!!!
بعد هذه الحوادث المرورية البليغة والتي تحصد الأرواح هل سنجد خطوات عملية لمنع تكرارها أم ستكتفي الجهات الرسمية بتشكيل اللجان المختلفة وإعداد التقارير وبالتالي سيتم حفظها في ملفات الأرشيف …!!! إلا إذا كانت الشاحنات المكشوفة و التي خصصت أصلا لنقل البضائع و المواد مسموح بها رسميا في مملكة البحرين لنقل البشر أو العمال المساكين .. !!! فالقضية اليوم ليست محصورة بالسلامة المرورية فقط و لكنها تشمل على الكثير من الجوانب مثل الجوانب الإنسانية أو ما يطلق عليه بحقوق الإنسان والجوانب الأخلاقية والذوق العام السليم ..!!! فللبشر قيمة واعتبار .. فلا تركنوهم في الشاحنات المكشوفة ..!!
Using open trucks to transport workers isn't a secret. It is done every morning and evening in front of everyone, including Traffic officials who are responsible for upholding safety on our roads. It goes without saying that such trucks were not made to ferry passengers and this is what officials at the Ministry of Labour's Occupational Safety Department have announced. One of them even said that loading passengers in open trucks was a clear violation of the law, while another compared the practice to carrying cattle to the slaughter house. Following such tragic accidents in which lives are lost, will there be any practical steps to stop this from happening again or will the authorities just form a committee to study the accident, write a report and archive it? Or is it acceptable for labourers in Bahrain to be carried in such open trucks which were originally made for transporting goods? This isn't a traffic matter alone and raises questions about our human rights practice, moral values and public manners. Human beings have a value and dignity..Don't ferry them around in open trucks!
Moroccan blogger Mohammed Saeed Hjiouij is also angry and has another battle to fight. This time is it against the repression of culture in the Arab world.
تعيش الثقافة العربية أزمة تواصل حقيقية، إذ لا مكان لها في الحضور الإعلامي، حيث استحوذت السياسة والرياضة على كل صفحات الجرائد وكل الشاشات! يبدو أن الإبداع هو آخر ما يفكر فيه العربي.
نلقي نظرة على أي من الجرائد العربية فنجد ثلث صفحاتها مخصص للكوارث وأخبار الحروب حول العالم، مع منوعات أخرى. الثلث الثاني مخصص للإعلانات التجارية، ويخصص الثلث الباقي لأخبار الرياضة والرياضيين. بعض الصحف قد تخصص صفحة أو نصف صفحة للثقافة، لكن ما إن يحصل فائض في الإعلانات التجارية حتى تكون تلك الصفحة أول الضحايا.
حتى القنوات الفضائية تتعامل مع الأمر بذات الطريقة.. حتى الفضائيات الإخبارية الصرفة تخصص نشرات كاملة للرياضة وللاقتصاد، وتتجاهل الثقافة كأن لا وجود لها.
أليس للثقافة والأدب محض اهتمام عند العربي؟ أليس هذا الإبعاد قمع ضد المجتمع؟
نعرف أن المثقف أول من يراد تدميره في الحروب، ويكون آخر ما يدك ما حصون. هو ضمير الأمة وصوتها. أقصد طبعًا المثقف الوطني المهموم بقضايا وطنه، وليس الكلب الراكع بين قدمي السلطان.
نشر الثقافة عبر وسائل الإعلام الجماهيرية يجعل الثقافة ذاتها جماهيرية، ويصبح التفكير جماهيريا والمعرفة ملكًا للكل. لكن أصحاب الحل والعقد لا يريدون ذلك، فيحاربون بالتالي حضور الثقافة والإبداع بكل الأشكال لأجل تنميط المجتمع وقولبته.
بكل تأكيد أزمة الإبداع العربي ليست بسبب فقر مادي، كما يحاولون –أحيانا- إقناعنا، قدر ما هي بسبب فقر في استشراف المستقبل.
There is a real crisis with culture in the Arab world. There is no longer any space for it in newspapers on a television, which only cover politics and sports. It seems that culture is the last thing on the Arab readers and viewers minds. Take a look at Arab newspapers. You will notice that a third of the pages are set for politics and the news of wars and disasters; a third for commercial adverstising and the rest for sports. Some newspapers may set aside a page or two for culture, but those pages are certainly the first to be axed once there is a surplus in advertising. Even television channels deal with the issue in a similar manner. Even news channels set aside programmes for sports and economics while continuing to overlook culture as it it doesn't exist. Aren't Arabs concerned with culture? Isn't this policy of keeping culture at bay an act of repression against society? We all realise that the cultured person is the first target in any war. He is the voice and conscience of a nation. Here I mean the nationalist intellectual who is concerned about his nation and not the dog under the Sultan's feet. Spreading culture in popular media makes it accessible to the people, thereby making culture and knowledge the property of all. But those in charge don't want that and are fighting it in everyway they can to take control of all that is happening in society. It is without doubt that this Arab crisis isn't because of a lack of money as they sometimes try and convince us. It is because of a lack of having the ability to understand the needs of our future.

بعد متابعة بسيطة لمحتوى بعض المدونات والمواضيع المطروحة لاحظت انخفاض واضح في مشاركة الآنسات والسيدات في المواضيع السياسية. وفي كثير من المناسبات رأيت ان المدونات أو الزائرات المستمرات لبعض المواقع يشاركن بحماس في المواضيع الاجتماعية والأدبية والفكاهية ويختفين عندما تطرح مواضيع سياسية وبالأخص السياسية العالمية أو غير المحلية
لا يمكنني أن أتأكد من دقة هذه الملاحظة ولا من الأسباب وراء ذلك – ان كانت تلك ظاهرة فعلية. لذا فانني أطرح هذا الموضوع للنقاش لأتعرف على آرائكم وتحليلاتكم. ولكن بافتراض ان الملاحظة صحيحة فان اسباب عزوف الشباب بشكل عام والنساء بشكل خاص عن النقاش السياسي قد تعود لأحد هذين السببين أو كلاهما- الأول: عدم الاكتراث أو الاهتمام بما يحدث في السياسة المحلية أو خارج أسوار الكويت ، الثاني: الشعور بنقص الخبر في هذه المجالات وبالتالي الاكتفاء بالقراءة دون محاولة الدخول في النقاش
After scanning the contents of some blogs, I have realised that there is a drop in the number of women bloggers writing and commenting about political issues. I saw that women bloggers and visitors comment with great interest in social, cultural and humour posts but have nothing to say about political issues and international affairs. I cannot be certain whether this observation is accurate nor the reasons for it – if this is the case. I would therefore like to bring this issue to the forefront and seek your opinion on the situation. If the situation is as I read it, then there could be two reasons. One: Lack of interest in local and international politics; Two: A feeling that the news story isn't complete and therefore many would just read it and refrain from commenting.
Away from human rights, cultural repression and the lack of women bloggers, Amir from Egypt, made me spill my coffee all over the keyboard as I was reading this.
ألقت مباحث قصر النيل القبض علي شاب وفتاة أثناء جلوسهما معا علي كورنيش النيل بينما كان الشاب '25 سنة’ يقوم بتقبيل الفتاة '21 سنة’ في نهار رمضان وسط دهشة واستياء المارة.. تم احالتهما للمحاكمة فقضت محكمة جنح قصر النيل برئاسة محمد السيد رئيس المحكمة بتغريمهما مائة جنيه لكل منها.
وقف الشاب أمام المحكمة يدافع عن نفسه وفتاته وقال ان هذه الفتاة زميلته في العمل وانه اعتاد تقبيلها عند رؤيتها لأنها مثل ‘أخته’
Qasr Al Nile plainclothes policemen arrested a young man and woman while they were sitting on the Nile water front after the man, aged 25 years, kissed the woman, 21, in front of people during Ramadan. They were taken to court where Judge Mohammed Al Sayed ordered them to pay 100 pounds each. The young man stood in court to defend himself and the girl saying that the girl was his work colleague and that he is used to kissing her when he saw her because she was just like his sister.
Weren't we just saying something about human rights a moment ago? Whatever..
