China: Foxconn and First Financial Daily's collective statement

Yesterday, FoxConn and the First Financial Daily News released a joint statement: FoxConn would drop the charge while both sides made apologies and expressed multual respects towards each other in order to build a “harmonious society”.

Many bloggers who have been blogging about the case and defending for the journalists felt very frustrated about such outcome:

Mindmeters who was the first to bring the issue to the blogsphere criticizes 1st Financial Daily:

Unprofession and cowardice, you have got both awful characters now, please step aside. Don't called yourself the most influential financial news. If you are that influential, China would be too pathetic.

Li Tian Lun calls the statement “The Ugly joint statement”:

I don't know how can people respect a sweatshop factory, a company that treads on labour law?… They should be apologetic towards the workers and towards those who have supported them. “

Bingfeng teahouse, who has been translating workers’ testimony on FoxConn's working conditions, writes his headline with a sense of irony: The show is over, FoxConn and CBN say “We love each other”.

Wang Xiao Feng, characterizes the ending as “Hollywood movie”, which is dramatic and ridicuous:

Let's talk about reconciliation, how about the truth of that reports? if they are true, how should we deal with FoxConn? if they are fake, how come FoxConn would choose to reconciliate?

Why do the bloggers so frustrated about such “harmonous ending”? Keso gives us some explanation in “Who are the losers in FoxConn and 1st Financial Daily Case?”

In this country, which has strong will to become wealthy, all the political, economic and legal resources have been sided with big corporates like FoxConn. Now even media can only perform as a make-up artist, who can speak for the workers “who want to have more over-time work!”? Who are there to defend the rights of the deprived people?

Media can reconcile with the capital harmoniously, however, such reconciliation is trade with the society's respect towards legal system, public trust towards the media and advancement of the society. I believe most of the bloggers would not follow the map of harmonious society. Even if we lose everything, at least we keep our social conscience.

Forest wind in interlocals.net translates a post from inmediahk.net connecting the outcome of FoxConn case with the 5 years sentence of Ching Cheong (a journalist originally from Hong Kong) .
