Sean Roberts reports that awarenes of Kazakhstan in the United States is much higher than it was a few years ago as a result of Sascha Baron-Cohen's “Borat” character. He notes that an official Kazakh media campaign campaign promoting the country in the leadup to President Nursultan Nazarbaev's visit to the US will coincide with advertisements for the Borat movie.

Somehow It Feels Like Peter Sellers Should Be Involved
Borat, Ali G, and statecraft.
Can Sean Roberts ask his wife Aselle, who is ethnic Kazakh woman and from Almaty whether she was not insulted at all by the way her country and nation was portrayed in this movie? I doubt this…
“Borat” wasn’t actually about Kazakstan. That IS part of the fun he pokes at the viewers and critics. You think you are watching Kazakstani customs being misrepresented, but there is actually NOTHING Kazakstani in the film. People who criticize the film for mispresenting Kazakstan don’t realize the joke is still on them.
