Romania: Homophobia and Gay Rights

Cristian of Owlspotting posts a candid reflection on homophobia and gay rights in Romania: “If “Will and Grace” was a Romanian sit-com, Will would either be spending a lot of time in the emergency room, or he would be experimenting with innovative forms of denial.”

As a gay Romanian I can say I suffered a lot under the communist regime in Romania…but now it’s even worse. Christianity has replaced communism in attacking gays with a tremendous success.
The Official Churches (eastern orthodox, catholic and especially neoprotestant) are competing with each other in denying any rights to “satan’s people” – that means for the sexual minorities. It is free season for chasing gays; sometimes the mere hatred propagated by the right wing is leading many youngsters to suicide. Officially the state is against discrimination, but unofficially the same persons are many times the inspirers of hatred. I can give authentic examples of this hateful attitude and I would like to translate for others important hate examples coming from Romania, from the Romanian press.
I cannot but agree with E.M.Cioran when he said “Nobody will ever know how much suffering and hatred did Christianity bring to the human race”.
