Barbados: Common entrance examination

“Monday was Common Entrance Exam day in Barbados,” writes Titilayo at The Pan Collective. She explains why this exam (sometimes called 11-plus), which determines which secondary schools children will attend, is such a big deal. “To a child that age, it can probably feel like your entire future is hanging in the balance.”

I think that too much emphasis is being placed on Common Entrance Exams not only in Barbados but in other caribbean islands as well. The pressure that some parents put on their kids to pass the exams is often very overwhelming for these 10, 11 and 12 year olds. I feel some form of assessment is necessary for students making the transition from elementary to high school but the CEE may not be the only way. Give the kids a break!!
