Caribbean: Music and copyright

Attorney and writer/blogger Nyashazasha publishes a well-researched article on copyright issues affecting the Caribbean music industry.

  • Actually, that’s just Jamaica and it doesn’t mention the Act of Chaguramas or anything… I’d personally like to know if JACAP goes around forcing businesses to pay to play a radio in their place of business like COTT does. I’d also like to know whether Jamaica has adopted the Sonny Bono Act as Trinidad and Tobago has.

All countries within CARICOM are supposed to have compatible intellectual property laws – it’s within the Act. Perhaps that is one aspect of CSME with the Caribbean Court system that needs to be addressed.

  • Taran:

The article also mentions the Caribbean Copyright Link (CCL), so does take into consideration the members of that organisation (Jamaica, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados) hence the reason I’ve labelled it “Caribbean”.

If you have specific questions about the issue you could also drop the author of the piece a line or leave a comment on her blog, as she is an attorney and specialist in this area.

  • You know, people just don’t get it so I spent the time and wrote this:

There’s a lot more to this than people are talking about right now, experts or no. ;-) Have a nice day.

  • The author of the piece I linked is not necessarily going to be reading the comment thread for this post, so I still think it would be useful if you took the discussion over to her blog as well.

While you may not consider her an expert (though note that the word I in fact used is “specialist”), it is her insight – or lack thereof – that you are critiquing, so it would probably be instructive for her as well. One of the reasons GV links blogs is so that people will actually go to the blogs and read them: not all the discussion needs to take place here.
