Brazil: Getting Rolling Stoned in Rio

Cuaderno Latinoamericano, a group blog maintained by students at Tulane University, says that the Rolling Stones will be playing a free concert this weekend in Rio de Janeiro. Free, that is, unless you take into account the $750,000 that the city is paying to make it happen.

  • The concert is apparently taking place on Copacabana beach! Photos of the massive stage they’re building here – http://www.iorr.org/rio/index.htm.

Apparently this is for some kind of TV special and DVD, so I guess the $750,000 investment is seen as tourism promotion. I find the timing of the event strange as well, as Brazil is in the throes of its Carnival season.
