Jordan: Blogging and Journalism

Lina is not happy that the Felix Moley Journalism Competition through the Institute for Humane Studies is not considering Blog entries as valid to enter the competition, specially that she believes that blogs are playing a very important role vis-à-vis today's mainstream media, and that they are a powerful tool of expression, especially in countries with less press freedom and less open media… how come they aren't recognized as “published” writings by an Institute supporting liberal values?

Lina does allow comments in her blog, so I’d like to pipe up here. I’m the editor of OhmyNews International in Seoul. We have over 500 citizen reporters from all over the world, a large number of which are either pro journos (such as from Iran, Chile and Nepal) or bloggers.
When the bloggers submit slightly modified blog posts to us, invariably I have to send them back for extensive additions/revisions. The blog post as it stands is often really engaging, thoughtful and informative. But though the “voice” may be strong, it doesn’t seem to get the who/what/where/when/why just right for it to be publishable.
In OhmyNews’ case, we editors vet these stories and do our best to get them ship-shape. It’s time consuming, but worthwhile. So in the case of the Felix Moley Journalism Competition, I can understand their position.
