Venezuela: Media Objectivity

Daniel is concerned about the loss of Radio Nacional de Venezuela's objectivity while Aleksander Boyd says the same of the international press.

  • Are there any Venezuelan blogs by Venezuelans that are pro-Chavez? Or can’t the majority of Venezuelans afford the internet access required to blog their praises? It just seems that the only Venezuelan blogs are anti-Chavez and I refuse to accept that they’re completely representative. It’s very difficult to gauge anything from these blogs without something else to compare it to.

  • Matt,

You bring up a good point that I’ve been wanting to address. Venezuelan blogs that are written in English do seem to be exclusively anti-Chavez, but Venezuelan blogs written in Spanish are much more balanced. This post by Afrael and the comments that follow are more typical of a political conversation you’d find in the Venezuelan blogosphere.

I will try to write a more thorough post with lots of translations explaining all this in the upcoming weeks.

  • Thanks, David. And keep up the good work!

  • Matt,

Indeed there are blogs in English that purportedly inform about the situation in my country. These are Venezuelanalysis.com, Vheadline.com, oilwars.blogspot.com, veninfo.org, handsoffvenezuela.org, venezuelasolidarity.org.uk, vicuk.org. The fascinating thing about the mentioned blogs/websites is that none of them are written by Venezuelans but by foreigners who happen to live/have lived in the country. Another equally interesting aspect is that some of them receive financial support from the government of Hugo Chavez. Now would you trust something coming from an official mouth? Not me and like myself very many of my compatriots.

We certainly can not claim to be the voice of the universal truth, however people on the other side have got such a critisable credentials that their arguments are void.

  • Thanks Aleksander – a lot of those I had never seen before. I’ll definitely try to get a post out focusing on Venezuela sometime this week.

  • David,

If you plan to write on Venezuela current political situation using references to blogs written in Spanish, don’t miss the recent Kira Kariakin’s post at

    http://www.k-minos.com/2005/09/venezuela-apreciacin-personal.html

Also, you may follow the conversation in others blogs (both pro and critical to Chavez’ government) that comes forth from Kira’s post.
