Mongolia: Rabbi visits local Jews

Nabetz at New Mongols posts (with a nod to Siberian Light) on Jews in Mongolia.

  • I was disappointed with this story. From the title I expected it would be about a population of Mongolian Jews, not unlike China’s Kaifeng Jews or the Bukharan Jews of central Asia. After clicking through the links, I got to the original story, which was about a Russian rabbi visiting Mongolia’s Jewish population. The article shows a picture of the rabbis with some Mongolians, but the text of the article says that the Mongolian Jewish population is made up of businessmen and NGO workers – ie, not Mongolians. There are probably very few countries that don’t have a handful of expat Jewish families living there, but that’s a far cry from a home-grown Jewish population with its own culture and traditions. That would have made a far more interesting story.

  • Yes, I can see what you mean. But I liked the idea of the Rabbi journeying across the steppes to visit the flock(although that’s probably not the right metaphor).
