That doesn’t strike me as a fair complaint. The negative story in question was about Guatemalan prisoners using mobile phones to coordinate attacks on fellow inmates – talk about taking the idea of smart mobs literally. The fact that it’s about an usual use of technology, it’s exactly the type of story that would make it onto BoingBoing and countless other blogs that cover high tech culture. In contrast, posting a message about Guatemalan being a truly great cultural destination would seem completely off-topic and out of character for BoingBoing. So while I am equally frustrated with American media’s portrayal of many countries in the south only in times of violence rather than in a positive light, I don’t think this particular complaint against BoingBoing is warranted. -ac

I take your original comment in English, because you used a Translation Service and it didn’t gave the same meaning in English.
First, The reference that has been made of my site in Global Voice Online, doesn’t reflect what I wrote in Spanish. David who is the author, says that I complained that when “Guatemala is finally covered” by BoingBoing it was just to talk about violence instead of make any reference to the recognizement that BBC gave to Guatemala, however it´s not what I said literally in Spanish.
My article reflects the frustration of one guatemalan person who sees that foreigns just know about us mostly for being a poor and violent country instead of the beautiful tourist place that we are. I’m not complaining against BoingBoing, what I mean is that the gangs violence in Guatemala extended as much that until they mentioned us.
Furthermore, you’re wrong if you think that BoingBoing only “cover high tech culture”, because they have always covered many other topics, as you can see.
This is just to explain what I really meant in Spanish, David please I appreciate if you could fix your transalation because it changes the sense of my post.

Tomo tu comentario original en inglés pues lo que escribiste utilizando un servicio de traducción, no se apega en lo absoluto a lo que quieres decir.
Primero que todo, la referencia que hacen a mi sitio en Global Voices Online no refleja lo que yo escribí en español, David quien es el autor, da a entender como que yo me quejé de que “por fin BoingBoing escribió algo acerca de Guatemala” pero que solo fue para hablar de lo malo como la violencia y no del reconocimiento que tuvimos por la BBC, sin embargo eso no es lo que yo doy a entender.
Mi artículo refleja la frustación de un Guatemalteco de darse cuenta que las personas extranjeras nos conocen mayormente por ser un país con violencia y pobreza, y no como el bello destino turístico que es, y no me quejo contra BoingBoing, sino que doy a entender que el tema de las maras trascendió tanto que hasta ellos nos citaron.
Además te equivocas con el concepto que tienes de BoingBoing, pues no es un blog que trate solamente acerca de la tecnología, pues desde siempre han tocado muchos otros temas.
Escribo ésto para aclarar lo que realmente quise decir, David podrías por favor cambiar la traducción ? pues lo que escribiste en inglés le cambió totalmente el sentido a mi artículo.

Oscar is right – my one sentence description did a poor job conveying everything in his post. In part, it was a less than ideal translation, but it also shows the limits of our global roundups category – especially when linking to posts in other languages. It is my understanding that our description in the global roundups should be as brief as possible and serve to offer a preview of what the author wrote, rather than a summary. Unfortunately, when I write short previews of posts written in Spanish rather than English, I think many Global Voices readers might interpret my description as a summary.
Oscar, I would be more than happy to change the description to however you see fit, but in all honesty, I can’t think of a better alternative in just one or two sentences. Regardless, to clear up any confusion, I’ll translate the entire post into English here. The title of the post is difficult to translate, but is along the lines of “Until We Even Appear in BoingBoing.”
Oscar tiene razón – mi descripción no dejó bien claro el sentido del articulo. En parte, fue una traducción mala, pero también es un ejemplo de los límites de nuestra categoría de “Global Roundup” – especialmente cuando enlacemos artículos en otras idiomas. Yo tengo entendido que la descripción en los “global roundups” debería ser breve y que sirve como una introducción al articulo mejor que resumen del articulo. Desafortunadamente, cuando enlacemos artículos escritos en español, me parece que los lectores de Global Voices leen las introducciones como si fueran resúmenes.
Oscar, con gusto cambiaría la traducción. Nada mas que no se que sería mejor. Pero de todos modos, he traducido todo el articulo para evitar confusión.
