Russia: Way to Go, Russia!

The Russian blog Joy de Vivre applauds the Kremlin's decision to withdraw the accreditation of ABC journalists following the broadcast of an interview with Chechen leader Shamil Basayev.

  • The futile and irresponsible ban on ABC journalists by the Russian authorities is merely one more instance of the new-style Kremlin’s old-style thinking: one recalls that at one time in Moscow so many Western journalists were banned that only one – Harrison Salisbury – remained.

Andrei Babitsky is a brave and independent-minded journalist whose reporting is in the best traditions of Russian dissident thought and opinion-making. Together with journalists such as Yulia Latynina, Anna Politkovskaya, Leonid Radzikhovsky and others, he has exposed the Kremlin’s complicity in the acts of terrorism that have shaken Russia, and has pointed to the betrayal of the people of the Russian Federation by their own government.

Putin’s criminal war in Chechnya, which has killed more than 200,000 of the republic’s inhabitants, is being deliberately prolonged and exacerbated by the Russian federal authorities in order to justify their increasing stranglehold on freedom of speech and the exercise of democracy throughout Russia. Shamil Basayev is Putin’s assistant and collaborator in this venture.

Way to go? More like way to hell.
