Skypecast: Singapore's mr. brown

I had a giggle-filled conversation today with Singapore's “enfant terrible,” Lee Kin Mun, aka mr. brown.

Topics included: How he instigated the Great Singaporean Conspiracy, the upcoming bloggers’ conference, “Singlish,” (English is one of Singapore's 4 official languages along with Mandarin Chinese, Tamil and Malay, but the locals like to combine these all together plus several other dialects like Hokkien and Cantonese), his often raunchy and irreverent podcasts, plans to podcast Star Wars in Singlish with another nefarious character, Mystery Tan Lines. Tomfoolery aside, mr.brown also held forth on questions of censorship and self-censorship, the shutting down of the blog AcidFlask, and how blogs are inevitably changing the media landscape of Singapore.

My biggest takeaway? You don't always have to take yourself seriously to be influential!

  • Skypecast interview with Global Voices Online

Rebecca MacKinnon, “recovering TV reporter-turned-blogger” (she was based in China and Japan for CNN), interviews me over Skype for a Global Voices Online podcast. I really enjoyed the 35-minute chat with her. You gotta love a technology that allows you

BOYCOTT Today paper until they bring back Mr Brown. No person should be made a scapegoat for the editor/boss. The editors obviously knew what was coming up and chose to make Mr Brown a scapegoat. Mr Brown (Lee Kin Mun) is a normal person with a wife and two kids to feed and he often writes about his kids (how anti-establishment is that???), and all he did was to make some jokes that some humourless people find unfunny but most Singaporeans appreciate as just humour (yes, Singaporeans like to laugh at ourselves in self-deprecating humour at our Singlish and other stuff).

Spread the message to your friends today — BOYCOTT Today paper. Support Mr Brown.
